A murder... a tragic accident... or just parents behaving badly? What's indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what? Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads: Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She's funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline's youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline's teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline's ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?). Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn't be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay. New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.… (mere)

Initially I thought this was an un-challenging chick-lit story but it eventually toughened up into something interesting. Quite a topical story about violence and bullying. And a really great set of twists toward the end that made it all worthwhile.

Liane Moriarty is an impressive author and is near the top of my favourites list. ( )

Big Little Lies is a story about a group of mothers whose children all attend the same Kindergarten class. What first appears to be a story about cliques within the school community, eventually turns into more as truths about the characters are revealed. In the beginning of the book, we learn that something bad happened at the school's trivia fundraiser. Then the story is rewound to reveal the events leading up to trivia night and eventually what happened and to whom. This book did an excellent job keeping me turning the page (or keeping the ear buds in since I listened to the audio book). I liked the characters and was interested in what was happening in their lives. I did figure out many of the twists and revealed early in the book, but this did not take away from the feeling of suspense and my interest in seeing if my hunches were correct. What seemed like a silly story about social dynamics at a school soon became a story about serious issues, making the book's point that things aren't always what they seem. I would definitely recommend giving this story a try. ( )

Très bien construit, complexe et simple. ( )

Needed a fun book, and this did not disappoint. The other reviews described it a funny book about domestic violence. Strangely, that's accurate, but looks weird when I type it out. Suffice it to say that this was an enjoyable read, with great characters, fun plot twists, and a profound sensitivity to what peoples lives are like behind the closed doors of typical suburban neighborhood homes. 5728. Big Little Lies, by Liane Moriarty (read 31 Dec 2020) Ever since 7 May 2027, when I read this author's The Husband's Secret, I have had the intention to read another book by her, since I was somewhat impressed by that well-crafted novel. This is the next novel she has written. It is also well plotted and is also concerned with parents who have kids--kindergartners, this time--in school in Sydney, Australia. There are a number of parents and one has to work to keep them correctly in mind, but there are dramatic events, including domestic abuse and tensions involving parents who are fiercely divided in regard to their loyalties and dislikes. One is caught up in the story and it is easy to keep reading since one wants to see how it all comes out. But I suspect I will not feel I need to read another of this author's books. ( )
