These are less well known stories than the ones found in Malory, and it's good to have them brought to our attention. A lovely book, but marred by poor production values: a good copy editor would have stamped out all those awful typos ("ascent" instead of "assent" occurred so many times I nearly got on my palfrey to ride to King Arthur's court and petition for some gorgeous knight to deliver me from the typo monster. In this volume, leading Arthurian scholar and storyteller John Matthews has gathered a rich collection of "forgotten" Celtic and medieval tales and retells them as thrilling new stories in fresh, readable prose. Tracing the richness, color, and vibrancy of the Arthurian traditions, this illustrated anthology reaches back before the familiar tales of chivalry and romance to unearth surprisingly savage tales. Funny, dark, and revelatory--depicting Arthur as a wild warrior who leads a ragtag band of heroes into battle against the Saxons and in a timeless struggle against the forces of the Otherworld--these little-known stories will delight any Arthur aficionado.
