From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie...

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus big-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"â??mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpiesâ??are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale… (mere)

I loved the premise of this book and enjoyed it. There was some overblown dialog and simplification of situations, but it remained a great start to a series. When I say 'overblown', it felt at times that some of the dialog was pulled from a series from the 80s/90s. Also, there were some dark things that happened in the book that I felt Ms Vincent didn't allow her characters fully invest and/or internalize.

I will definitely move on to the next books and hope that some of the situational and dialog issues get smoothed out. ( )

Rachel Vincent has done it again with Menagerie!

This book was perfection in just over 400 pages! I wasn't sure what to expect going in with such an odd idea behind the book, but it was incredible! Rachel Vincent never lets me down!

The book follows Delilah, a human who is forced to perform in the Metzger's Menagerie of strange creatures. When she is pulled away from her normal, everyday life to suddenly becoming a circus animal, how will she take it? Rachel Vincent helps you find out!

Overall, I loved this book. I found the first half of the book very slow to get through, but the second half was a breeze. While it did take me a while to get through the first half of the novel, it's still worth it. The first half isn't boring, it's just a little slow with introductions, character development and shocking plot devices. The second half has a lot more action and intrigue in it.

I loved this novel! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone! People who love fantasy, supernatural, shapeshifter, and story's that open your eyes to touchy subjects will love this story!!

Five out of five stars! ( )

This is a well-written and engrossing story set in a reality that's turned 180 degrees. The cryptids are treated in a way that felt believable, even when it was so fucking grim (real talk: Humans are 100% horrible and considering the way we treat each other, it did not stretch credulity to imagine how we would treat these SENTIENT BEINGS).

I'd really love tons of short stories or whatever set in the universe that would expand on the Reaping and the cryptids and all that. Like, gimme a history book set in your fascinating world, Rachel Vincent. Go full Tolkien on this thing. ( )

When I first started this book I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but I ended up loving it. The story was great and the characters were phenomenal. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. The whole thing was super fresh and original. ( )
