This chapter book was one of my favorites to read as a young child. The story is about a girl named Amelia who takes everything literal. Amelia becomes sick the day her class goes on a field trip to visit the city zoo and comes up with a brilliant idea to create her own zoo in her backyard using her classmates pets. She ends up inviting all of her friends to bring their pets and to help plan different exhibits and rides. Suddenly a squirrel monkey escapes from the city zoo and Amelia Bedelia's backyard zoo becomes the talk of the town. She goes wild trying to catch the squirrel monkey! I enjoyed this book because it is easy to read and humorous. This book would be suitable for second through fourth grade and can be used to teach idioms as there were many presented throughout the book. ( )

Amelia Bedilia is a commonly known book that gives young readers plenty of laughs. This series is based off of the childhood of Amelia a familiar housekeeper who takes everything literal. This book is all about how her friends and her build a zoo in the backyard that is filled with stuffed animals and fun attractions. With the kid friendly language, the short simple sentences and the funny content, it is a great book for children in grades 1st through 4th. This book does a great job of including new vocabulary and idioms throughout the entire story. ( )
