ECONOMICS, FINANCE, BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY. In THE LOST CONTINENT BBC Europe Editor Gavin Hewitt tells the story of a flawed dream, a noble vision that turned dangerous, and which led Europe into its gravest crisis since World War Two - a crisis for which it was totally unprepared. A pillar of the post-war European dream was a shared currency, and with it came easy money, seducing some countries into a wild spending binge. Great title! Good counterpart to Bootle's "Trouble with Europe", this is more historical rather than analytical/predictive, includes some great pen-portraits, especially of Berlusconi and his antics. The serious point emerging is about the EU's threat to sovereignty:e.g. both Papandreou and the risible Berlusconi were elected leaders bulldozed out of office by the EU high heijuns. Hewitt shows well how the EU project was rooted in Europe's recovery from Nazism and the Soviet threat and has failed to evolve much since.

I was looking for a book that argued the case in favour of the European Union. Still looking! ( )
