I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher, Redhoof Books, in exchange for a review.

What a great story! I was drawn in by the idea of living several lifetimes, sort of like the movie "Groundhog's Day". Before I knew it, it was more than just a recounting of one man's journey, but a mission, to stop another from destroying the known world. The intricate story told over fifteen lifetimes of one person, and the detail to historical events was very interesting. Add in personal conflicts, personal debates over moral/ethic issues, and you have this writing. Claire North has done a superb job in creating a tale that makes a reader question things, or sit back and ponder that whole "what if...". ( )

A bit of a slow start for me, with a non-linear story telling that seemed a bit jumpy at first. The story involves time travel, or at least a Groundhog Day like view of time where certain people live their lives over & over from birth to death, but in each consequent life they remember everything that happened in all of their former lives.

I trudged through the slow beginning because I wanted to see where the author was going with the concept, and found the rest of the book enjoyable.

I'm still not as much of a fan of Claire North's books as when she was writing as Kate Griffin and Catherine Webb, but this was definitely one of her better efforts, since I found the story very engaging and really wanted to know how it all turned out in the end. Time travel narratives are generally also not a genre that I enjoy, but this book felt like it was in a similar vein to the River of No Return, where time travel was a feature but not the starring point. Instead of simply having characters able to travel through time North explores the idea of rebirth, but living the exact same life and consciousness - or different variations of the same life depending on choices. The story revolves around Harry August, an orphan who discovers his miraculous ability, but falls in league with another person (Victor Rankis) who is determined to spend his multiple lives changing how the world works. Obviously actively meddling in the timeline of the world has consequences, and it is up to Harry to either stop Victor or find out his origins so that his timeline can be stopped. Overall I wouldn't say that the book has a huge draw for rereading for me, but it was none-the-less highly enjoyable during. ( )

It's been a while since I was able to just sit down and read a book cover to cover, but I tore through this book's 400 pages in around 2 days.

It was a very good ready, engaging, challenging. It delves into some scientific theories that go a little over my head but which I enjoyed contemplating all the same. The characters are unique and interesting. The premise itself - of a group of people who live their lives on repeat - felt like a fresh way of approaching time shenanigans.

The end I felt was a little dissatisfactory, but I'm not sure what kind of satisfaction I was looking for. The plot was quite good except for a couple of things that I think were meant to be grand twists that weren't surprising to me.

I do hope that in the other 4 books this author has planned under this name that we see a bit more of this world.

All in all it was an excellent book and I would highly recommend it to just about anybody.

Do be warned though that the book deals pretty extensively with suicide and there's a bit of mention of rape. ( )
