Murder on the Arctic Sea

Detective Dylan Scott thinks cruising well above the Arctic Circle in November is nothing short of madness. He has zero interest in seeing the elusive aurora borealis, but agrees to the Norwegian holiday to keep his wife and mother happy. At least the biggest problem he'll have to deal with is boredom. But that boredom quickly dissipates when the unpleasant elderly woman in the neighboring cabin is found dead.

Everyone thinks Hanna Larsen had a heart attack. Everyone except Dylan. Dylan is convinced there's a killer aboard the Midnight Sun--a killer who may strike again...

This is a novella-length entry in Wells's Dylan Scott mystery series. It was OK, but I didn't like it as much as the previous novels. Dylan and his family are on a cruise to the Norwegian Arctic to see the Northern Lights. The cranky, unpleasant old woman in the cabin next to theirs is found dead on the first morning out. Her death is assumed to be from a heart attack, but Dylan is pretty sure there is something suspicious, because he heard sounds coming from the hallway in the middle of the night, and her cabin was right next to his at the end of the corridor.

Dylan, Bev, Vicky, and the kids are enjoyable as always, and I liked the cruise-ship atmosphere (and Dylan's standard aversion to things so many other people enjoy). The mystery itself was less appealing and less convincing to me. There were so many potential murderers, and none of the secondary characters were particularly interesting. The ultimate reveal wasn't out of nowhere, but it wasn't that satisfying to me. I think a novella is just not enough space to have a raft of suspects, you can't really do justice to any of them.

I'll still give it 3 stars, but it's not one I'm likely to reread. On to the next installment. ( )

Set on a cruise to Norway to view the Northern Lights, this is a light-hearted short story featuring Dylan Scott, private eye, who is intrigued by the sudden death of a passenger in the next cabin and determines to discover if it is murder and who is responsible if it is. Easy, undemanding reading. ( )
