In all honesty I'm not sure why I love these books. The writing is a bit stilted and yet it lulls you in with a steady rhythm and pins you down until you've read the last word. Penryn is a magical girl: all powerful and capable of feats she shouldn't be, but it works so, so well and she never gains random powers in a deux de machina type situation.

Yes, there are plenty of times during the books where things just fall into place such that everything ends okay in the end. And here's the honest truth: I think that's why I like it. Because for all the terrible things (and there are terrible things), the author never lies to you. She never gives you a false sense of safety or a false sense of danger. There is no blind siding, there is just that steady lull of action and progress and danger and falling down only to somehow land on your feet and just keep going. It's just a restful, fun read, while still be utterly dark and dangerous. For that reason alone I recommend it.

So, here's what you the reader probably want to know:
- There's an angel boy to crush on
- There's a powerful female character with a family that literally falls apart around her and still she presses on.
- There's no love triangle (I am so tired of these. Polyamory or bust from here on out authors. The triangle is used up and annoying)
- Bad guys
- Good guys
- A constantly evolving world building
- An interesting world
- New development, new changes, new rules, but they always fit the existing universe's rules just enough that you go "yup, I'm good with that miraculous save."
- A good end to an entertaining, fast-reading series ( )

DIALOGUE SPOILERS!!! but not really...and I loved writing this review so read it if y'all are interesed in this series/book

“Then they spread out into a line, hold hands, and bow again. Everyone is up on their feet, and none of us worry about the noise we’re making or what we might bring upon ourselves.

The twins are right. This is life.”

1. dee dum are my favorite set of twins in the whole wide universe. they are either super wise and smart or just dead funny but they're awesome badasses 24/7.

exhibit 1: “It’s not about logic or practicality or anything that makes a remote amount of sense.”

exhibit 2: “They’re mouthing the words to the garbled voice screaming over the intense electric guitar and drums blasting out of the speakers. They might look pretty badass if it weren’t for their hobo clown outfits.”

2. Raffe is my spirit animal. Actually pig farmers are *wink*

“You’re matching me up with a pig farmer?”
“He shrugs. ‘Or whatever it is that decent men do when they’re not at war. Although he should be able to protect you. Don’t settle for a man who can’t protect you.”

3. Raffe is my new boyfriend

“If I were human, I would have been the first in line for you . . .”

4. I love Raffe and his Watchers

“They won’t let any part of him fall to the ground,’ says Raffe in a quiet voice. ‘His brothers will keep him from falling.”

5. I love the name Raffe / Raphael now

“I have better things to do.’
‘Like what?’
He opens one eye and looks at me. ‘Like convince a stubborn girl to admit she’s madly in love with me.’
I can’t help but smile.
‘So if it’s not a pig farm that you want, what is it?’ he asks.
I swallow. ‘How about a safe place to live where we don’t have to scrounge for food or fight for it?’
‘It’s yours.’
‘That’s it? All I have to do is ask?’
‘No. There’s a price for everything.’
‘I knew it. What is it?’
‘Me.”

6. Where you get dating advice: Raffe. He sure knows a lot about relationships for an angel who is prohibited to have one. . . but he is immortal and has been alive for thousands of years. . .

“You should be with a nice human boy. One who takes your orders and puts up with your demands. Someone who dedicates his life to keeping you safe and well fed. Someone who can make you happy. Someone you can be proud of.”

6. Can I just say that i get teary eyed whenever something bad happens to one of paige's locusts 😭😭

7. Penryn is not my favorite character (not that i hate her or dislike her, per se) I have to admit but the story was perfect how it was written from her point of view. From what happens to her sister and her mom's background. I LOVED IT!! and I like how her mom is still the same at the end of the book because it said that this isn't something that needed fixing or needed to be changed. This tells a lot about the story, the characters and the author. I appreciated it so much how it wasn't shown as a sickness of some kind or something. Their family was absolutely perfect as the main mcs.

“Maybe they’re sick of being nothing more than rats rummaging through the trash and running for their lives. Maybe they’re ready to be human again, if only for an hour.”

Although I did have a slight problem with the details in some scenes I easily overlooked it. This is also a book that just dives into everything and I don't know if that is positive or negative, it just depends on the reader i guess.

8. The idea of this world is so genius. I have never even thought of a world even similar to this one. A post-apocalyptic world brought by angels. It's so smart and i am blown away. I'm sure it doesn't sound appealing at first but after reading it. . . this. is. just. amazing.

I am so dead and gone by this point. They have all come a long way. Ciao and peace out fam ✌🏼This is my new obsession

So here we are, at the End Of Days with Penryn at the very end of things. Now, she and angle Raffe are on the run, trying to find a way to reverse the changes to her poor sister, Paige. Paige was initially in a wheelchair but has undergone surgeries (or more...) to develop a taste for, um, raw meat. Oh, and there's an apocalypse going on, no big deal.

Honestly? I don't really know what happened, both on the literal and meta level. I had hoped there'd be an epic showdown, life-changing great rocking ending after an "eh" middle entry but it was really boring. The end was really formulaic. Penryn is basically focused on Raffe (and sometimes with Paige sometimes). But I never really understood what was going on--what exactly the conflict was, why we should care, what happened to Paige, etc.

This was apparently supposed to be a quintology (a series of five, I'm not sure what the's the correct term if there's one) and I think it shows. This ending feels extremely rushed and maybe the author was told she had to concentrate on the romance rather than the world-building, further discussions, etc.

I'm also not sure about issue of Paige being in a wheelchair at the start of this story to be given surgery that gives her the ability to walk in the end. Granted, she is horribly disfigured in the process and develops a taste for human flesh but again, the book was so rushed that I don't know if the author was going to do more.

It was part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription. If I had to borrow it from the library I would have likely dropped the trilogy. It killed time this Memorial Day weekend but I wouldn't rush to read it. ( )

Dedicated to readers like Penryn who have it tough at home, who had to grow up fast due to life circumstances, and who have no idea how much potential they really have. You are being fire forged, just like Penryn. And like her, you can turn your greatest trials into your greatest strengths.
