Tobias is marrying Alice Keating, the Gold King's daughter. So it isn't a good thing when Keating catches Tobias and Evelina kissing. With his usual vague threats, he coerces Evelina to work for him, moving to Whitechapel to find the Blue King's maker. Meanwhile, Imogen is having horrifying nightmares of the Whitechapel murders (yes, those Whitechapel murders), and Nick, along with Athena's Casket, has become an air pirate.

Evelina comes across the last person she expected to find in Whitechapel, and the very person who can teach her all the things she desires--but fears--to know. And she thinks he might be King Coal's maker, so it's to her advantage to stay close to him. And his automatons.

Once we learned what happened to Annie, I assumed she was somehow tied to Serafina. Her story was sad and terrible, because it was the hunger Magnus instilled in her that sent her out at night and her own confusion that caused such terrible things.

The very ending of the book, with Imogen pounding on the clock face from the inside, was great. It reminded me of things like The Twilight Zone and made me look forward all the more to the third book.

I remember that I had a slight complaint after the first book. It was to do with too many inner monologues to explain the world building to the reader. Well, it's all gone now. A Study in Darkness is extremely intense and utterly awesome. There, I said it. Wonderful steampunk read, and I even didn't mind a unique spin on Jack The Ripper. Wholly recommended, what an adventure!

Livelier than the first in the series. Evelina is briefly indiscreet and is banished to Whitechapel. A former schoolmate is discovered in an interesting new profession, Uncle Mycroft appears as does a dashing pirate. The Ripper is revealed and Evelina's is no longer left with an unrequited love life but not until suffering a savage and life threatening attack from the Ripper. And, college life is still ahead. ( )

The adventures of Evelina Cooper, ex-circus performer, London debutante, and niece of Sherlock Holmes, continue. Magic becomes more prevalent in this volume, with less steampunk.

A bomb at her uncle's home sends Evelina into the Gold King's home and an indiscretion there puts her firmly in his power. As she hides in Whitechapel trying to find who is helping the Blue King she also tries to avoid Jack the Ripper and learn magic from a mysteriously resurrected Mangus. Evelina suffers from being over confident in herself and never seeming to be able to ask for advice from her famous uncle or when he is in a position to help her she doesn't take the lifeline she should use. The book does suffer from being a middle book in a series so no real conclusions to the final arc but some things are settled in the story.
