Enjoyed the first chapter and thought I was going to get a hard hitting murder mystery. But it then moved into the territory of philosophy and teenage angst. The story concerns the discovery of a mutilated corpse in the woods on a small island off the coast of Seattle. More bodies are found and is there a link to an old ghost story. I really enjoyed this story much more than I thought I might at first. Told from the viewpoint of a socially awkward college age male it did not seem like it was going to appeal to me. However, it wasn't long before I was deeply involved in the story and the themes of good versus evil and much deeper philosophical questions that pervade this tale. Overall, I would give it an extra half star if possible because I was not able to put it down and ran my kindle out of juice trying to get it finished in one go. Even though I had figured out the killer long before the end I felt compelled to finish the tale to find out more about these characters and the eventual fall out from the situation. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
When a mutilated corpse is found bound to a tree deep in the forest of remote Aubrey Island, Washington, residents learn that the murder mirrors, in every ritualistic detail, a series of revenge killings described in a century-old local ghost story. More abductions and killings soon follow.Justin Riddley, recently transferred to the island's small college, faces growing evidence that one of his new friends and fellow students may be the murderer. John Marshall, redemption-seeking captain of the local police force, leads the frantic murder investigation and struggles to figure out whether the killings are tied to the island's dark and violent past. Tormented by tragic wartime memories, and more convinced with each day that it is humanity's fate to destroy itself, Marshall races against both the murderer and the specter of his own mental breakdown. As blood continues to spill, Riddley and Marshall wonder whether there may be a dark, universal force that drives evil deeds great and small, and whether the nature of one's childhood might sometimes, in the end, be all that separates the saint from the psychopath. As for character development, it could have used a little more. For all the philosophical, deep conversations that the characters were having, I didn't feel anything for any of them. They were just a part of the story, I wasn't interested in them, invested in what happens to them.
The story itself wasn't bad. What was going on with the killer and what was going on with Riddley and his friends was intertwined well.
All in all, not a bad book. There isn't really much else to say. It's not bad for an ex-FBI agent's foray into authorship. If you want to read it, go ahead. If you're iffy about reading it, give it a try. If you don't like philosophy you probably won't like it. I guessed the killer about 3/4 of the way, but I read a lot of murder mystery books. ( )
