Hannah and her sisters are trying to plan their Mother's wedding, but nothing with Delores (Mother) is easy. Mother keeps changing her mind on everything almost every day, and the sisters are totally frustrated. Meanwhile, while driving her cookie truck home on the back roads during a raging rainstorm, Hannah hits a man in the road. It was an accident, but Hannah is arrested for murder. Who was this stranger, why was he on the road during a storm, and how did he really die? Hannah's family and friends rally around Hannah to find out what really happened, while dealing with Delores' wedding plans.

A rather fun mystery where Hannah and her business are on the line. There was enough mystery and red herrings to keep me reading. It was a nice quick read. ( )

Hannah Swensen is having a bad time. Her mother is getting married soon but is rejecting all suggestions for the reception menu, and then during a thunderstorm Hannah accidentally runs over a man standing in the road. Nobody recognizes the man. He's a stranger in Eden Lake. Why was he standing in the roadway in the middle of a violent thunderstorm? When Hannah is arrested for vehicular homicide and thrown in jail, her family and friends rally around her to help investigate the case. The investigation leads to the seedy world of prostitution and drugs in the Twin Cities. Hannah wonders what sort of nefarious criminal she ran over with her cookie truck....and what was he doing in Lake Eden?

Well, Hannah definitely managed to get herself into hot water this time. I never thought Hannah would end up in a jail cell....but it was definitely a new plot line for this series. This time Hannah still found a body....but she ran the victim over with her truck. Yikes! lol.

Blackberry Pie Murder is the 17th book in the Hannah Swensen Mystery series. Lots of recipes are included, as usual. Most are cookie recipes because Hannah owns a bakery, but there are some others as well including fettuccine, salmon, pate and two blackberry drink recipes.

A weird love triangle between Hannah and her two love interests, Mike and Norman, is still ongoing. Sigh. This time, Norman does Hannah several huge favors and really steps up to help her.....but yet she still can't make up her mind or really fully return the love he feels for her. And, every time they try to have a private dinner at Hannah's condo, about six other people, including Mike, show up. You would think just once Hannah would understand Norman wants to spend some time with her alone....and she would tell everyone to just come another time. But no....Norman always ends up shoved aside. How on Earth has this man gone through 17 books now without losing his temper or at least telling Hannah that it bothers him? Hannah is even starting to acknowledge that it's weird. She calls the Norman-Hannah-Mike awkward moments at dinners and public events "The Hannah Sandwich". Come on, honey -- either make up your mind or break up with both of them.

I enjoyed this story. I always enjoy Hannah Swensen books. But, I do have to say that having the gang investigating a case involving prostitutes and drugs really seemed like it was pushing it a bit. The story line was a bit more edgy and dramatic. The finding of the body was definitely different. Plus, Hannah finally got into trouble, not directly because she constantly finds bodies, but because she sort of....created a dead body. oops. But....the more edgy plot was done within the confines of a cozy mystery. It seemed a bit out of place. For example, when Hannah and her mother went to the city to interview a prostitute, they offered her a box of cookies. It made me laugh. But hey, everyone loves chocolate cookies, right? Even hardened prostitutes who need interviewed for a case.

So, I did like the fact that this book went a completely new direction, but at times it just didn't work. It felt like Mister Rogers guest starring in an episode of Law & Order.

The best part of the story? Moishe the kitty discovering the joy of using a treadmill. Made me smile.

I'm almost caught up with this series! Just 3 more books, plus the new one coming out in February! I hope that the Norman-Mike conundrum has an answer by the time I get to the new book, Banana Cream Pie Murder. ( )

Hannah Swensen is up to her elbows in wedding plans . . . Delores and Doc are getting married in less than a month. And Delores keeps changing her mind about what she wants for the wedding and the reception. But Hannah’s wedding planning problems pale when, during a terrific thunderstorm, she hits a stranger with her cookie truck.

Hannah’s filled with guilt . . . and arrested for vehicular homicide.

In this seventeenth outing for the Eden Lake gang, all the expected characters are in place. And while Hannah hasn’t yet made a choice between Norman and Mike, at least she’s considering what she should do and both gentlemen are acting gentlemanly. And readers will be happy to find that Hannah has abandoned both the condescending attitude and her annoying Grammar-Nazi behavior. The result is a wonderful, straightforward mystery filled with lots of cookie-baking and some amateur sleuthing. Readers will discover a few unexpected twists and there are a couple of surprises in store for them as the story unfolds.

Hannah and company spend a great deal of time eating and there’s lots of coffee drinking [no derision intended . . . Hannah’s coffee-drinking is one of her more endearing qualities], but it all fits together nicely with the telling of the tale. As always, there are many recipes for readers to test, all conveniently located at the end of the chapters. [Sadly, however, there isn’t a recipe for Chocolate-Covered Cherry Cookies, the first cookie mentioned in the story.]

The murder mystery ends with a cliffhanger [tied to the accident]; readers will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in the cozy mystery series.

Recommended. ( )

Blackberry Pie Murder by Joanne Fluke
Love the Hannah Swensen series and all the characters involved in this family saga tale.
The three sisters, Hannah, Andrea and Michelle are wondering why their mother, Delores won't pick a color for the theme for her wedding to Doc. When she decides she changes her mind a week later.
Hannah heads to the car shop to pick up Lisa, her baker in The Cookie Jar and with the storm ends up running into a man and killing him.
She is in jail and with her notes and others helping to even figure out who the man is, there are many clues as they all gather with what they've seen. With lots of food recipes this is always a good story.
Lots of new things happen that are described, places where I never thought we'd see Hannah involved in....
Most of all I enjoy watching how she creates a new cookie-this is something I do yearly now as well. The freedom to play with food, flavors, textures, etc.
Excerpts from her next thriller series book, Dead Giveaway are included at the end.
This book has a bit of romance, mystery, baking, travel and new experiences.
I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest review ( )

and has designated Hannah and her sisters as wedding planners...so she says. Seems that Delores is having a hard time saying yes to the plans!

To add to this, while Hannah is driving on a winding road in a blinding thunder storm, she accidentley hits a stranger. She feels bad enough that he is dead, but things turn from worse to worse when she is arrested for murder. (yes, I typed worse to worse because it did) Mike is given the job of arresting Hannah but refuses and winds up being fired from the department.

The autopsy shows that the man did die on impact, but there is no way to identify him. All there us to go on is his height, weight and a diamond set in one of the man's teeth.

Then there are the questions of why the man was on this road in the countryside in such a bad storm, without any jacket and how did he get there?

With her usual team of helpmates, Hannah is on the hunt to solve this mystery.

By the way, plans do work out for Delores' wedding with help from an unexpected source! ( )
