This book rekindled my inner need to tidy up. I loved the author's approach to the decluttering process because she discusses the reasons why organization is so important and can brings profound changes in our lives. The very concept of "keep what sparks joys" may seem simple or even silly but it is very powerful once you learn what it means to you and what this feeling look like.

I think there are many references and influences of the japanese culture that makes the book very interesting and gave me a whole new vision of the objects I own and what is their purpose. The simple method of folding clothes is something that at first I thought was just an unimportant detail, but after I applied the method I could see the changes in my wardrobe organization and how I now assess my clothes.

It is a very joyful book, I enjoyed every bit of it because it seems the author speaks to us in a very intimate way, with sincerity and joy. ( )

Strange! The author has a (to my American sensibility) weirdly anthropomorphic attitude toward her things, her home, her environment... And yet it has led her to a very practical approach to paring down all the shit you've collected: gather up everything of one category that you own, pick up every single object individually, and think, carefully, how you feel about it. If you don't love it, toss it.

In fact it's not that simple, of course. The author deals with questions such as how to get rid of something you bought but never used/wore/whatever, and the order in which to tackle categories, according to what she believes will be easier/harder. Users of Goodreads, here, may freak out (as I did) at the casual attitude she has towards books: if you bought it more than X months ago, and haven't read it yet, you probably never will, so let it go (really not my style)—I suppose it would make more sense if your idea of a "book" is the latest issue of Vogue, but then, I also admit to an obsession.

Still, since reading this, I've been able to get rid of BAGS full of clothing I stopped wearing years ago (but were "still good") along with hundreds of books I realized I'd never care to read again, along with some crap I was sure I didn't need, but hadn't been able to shove out of the house before. I haven't even tried to fully embrace the method, but merely trying to maintain the mindset the author advocates has allowed me to shed more dead weight of stuff than ever before.

If you think your home feels in any way cluttered, read this book, and do what the author says, to the extent it makes sense to you. ( )

The author was just wackadoodle enough to keep me entertained and to get me to actually get my house in order. I was very skeptical until I started doing it all. I'm not really sure that my pants were liberated by being rolled up and stood on end or that my husband was happy that I counted his tshirts (110!!) Before I rolled them up and there is no way he will part with anything so I guess I'll just have half a tidied house. Does this mean I won't lose weight and get rich? Sigh. (If you read the praise in the front of the book, one person says "this book caused my divorce" and I can see why it would). ( )

Pondering objects in one's home from a different perspective adds a lot of questioning of one's consumer decisions. Going back to my roots- my mom was right about tidying, cleaning, and keeping my house in order. She always is. This book can help you if you want to be helped. ( )

The moment you first encounter a particular book is the right time to read it.
...we should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.
...the best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it.
I recommend that you always think in terms of category, not place.
Getting rid of other people’s things without permission demonstrates a sad lack of common sense.

Shouldn't be combined with The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story even though the titles are similar (at least in English). The two books were written several years apart and the manga is a fictionalized lesson on the KonMari Method, told through a story that doesn't appear in this book.
