These uncluttering books are great motivation to get things done. I especially appreciate this one, because it's targeting Japanese households which lack the space we tend to have here in the US. This helps with focus more on what you should keep and get rid of it. The main concept of this book is "Do you love it?". If yet, keep it, if not, then don't buy it or get rid of it. ( )

I picked this up in the hope that it would encourage me to reorganize the apartment, and it has. No idea when I'll get to it, but when I do the advice and tone of this book will influence how I "tidy up" my things.

This tome falls between a memoir and a self-help book, with enough description of the author's life and philosophy for me to contain my eyerolling at her particularly quirky opinions. Her habit of personifying things struck me as particularly silly, but it didn't hurt the overall message. There's also a significant amount of advice specific to Japanese culture, which was entertaining. ( )

I'm someone who doesn't tend to horde a lot of things but the past few years, excess possessions and clutter have been creeping up. After seeing a couple episodes of Marie Kondo's Netflix series, I decided to pick up two of her books to see if my family could benefit from her technique.

Overall, yeah, I think her method of discarding and organizing will help us out. I'm not big on the more emotional aspects - my clothes and possessions having feelings and valuing my gratitude - but I can get behind about 90% of what she had to say.

I'm planning to read [b:Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up|25614984|Spark Joy An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up|Marie Kondō|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1435598787s/25614984.jpg|45694823] very soon and then I'll be starting off on reacquainting myself with all of my stuff.

This book isn't just good advice. This book is wise. Her Shinto beliefs were almost the only thing that made me say "No, not for me," and in a book on how to arrange your space that is a huge win. I highlighted half this book and will definitely re-read to soak it in. It was that good. Also, I started the process and I must say that my closet is looking awesome right now, and I really enjoyed the work. If that isn't the biggest go-out-and-read-this-now statement, I don't know what would be. Highly recommended.

The moment you first encounter a particular book is the right time to read it.
...we should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.
...the best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it.
I recommend that you always think in terms of category, not place.
Getting rid of other people’s things without permission demonstrates a sad lack of common sense.

Shouldn't be combined with The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story even though the titles are similar (at least in English). The two books were written several years apart and the manga is a fictionalized lesson on the KonMari Method, told through a story that doesn't appear in this book.
