It was nothing special: it was like the story was an enormous "beat around the bush" for show that the protagonist finally feels that he can't lose anyone more. My first book by Murakami. I liked it, but I'm not entirely sure of what I read. I will read another. This is a really strange book to read after Anna's Quindlen's "Still Life with Bread Crumbs."
This is a book for both the new and experienced reader. It has a strange casualness, as if it unfolded as Murakami wrote it; at times, it seems like a prequel to a whole other narrative. The feel is uneven, the dialogue somewhat stilted, either by design or flawed in translation. Yet there are moments of epiphany gracefully expressed, especially in regard to how people affect one another. Reference guide/companion to
No library descriptions found. |

His style is so endearing to me. I'm not sure if it's the translation or the specific use of language, but the simplicity of his structure leads to incredible beauty in my mind. Wistful, nostalgic philosophies permeate this story and I loved every page.
The plot was intriguing, a mini-mystery that really connected with me. Tsukuru is the same age as I am now (36) and I can't help but think that, combined with the magic realism and the longing for the past, is one of the main factors I was so drawn to it right away.
I was so interested in his high-school friends, his relationship with Sara, his pilgrimage to track down the past, self-evaluate and discovery who he is and what he cares about. Fantastic book. (
