Once the golden boy of the English literary scene, now a clinically depressed writer of pulp crime fiction, Ash Winters has given up on love, hope, happiness, and most of all himself. He lives his life between the cycles of his illness, haunted by the ghosts of other people's expectations. Then a chance encounter at a stag party throws him into the arms of Essex boy Darian Taylor, an aspiring model who lives in a world of hair gel, fake tans, and fashion shows. By his own admission, Darian isn't the crispest lettuce in the fridge, but he cooks a mean cottage pie and makes Ash laugh, reminding him of what it's like to step beyond the boundaries of anxiety. But Ash has been living in his own shadow for so long that he can't see past the glitter to the light. Can a man who doesn't trust himself ever trust in happiness? And how can a man who doesn't believe in happiness ever fight for his own?… (mere)

Unlike any other romance

I realty liked this book. It really was unlike any other m/m I've ever read. Alexis Hall didn't reinvent the genre, her just did things a little differently. At first neither one of the Mc's was all that likeable. Ash was a mean little bitch and Darian was a loud annoying glitter pirate. But then, c they both kind of grew on you, especially Darian. I am in love with that man.
The story was good. It gave me everything I needed and a few things I didn't know I needed. There was plenty of sex, and it was well written, but this book isn't what I'd call hot. Jaknowwhatimean?

This book didn't make me cry ( well I did tear up a little towards the end ) and it's didn't make me hard, but I did tell enjoy it and I recommend it very much. ( )

The depiction of Ash's depression was very real and almost distressingly well done. I found his biting self-loathing and snobbish tendencies oddly endearing (albeit frustrating at times), knowing that we were seeing him through his own unreliable eyes.

And Darian? I completely fell in love. DARIAN YOU SWEET & BEAUTIFUL & FLAMBOYANT SOUL I LOVE YOU AND YOUR ESSEX ACCENT :')

A book that leaves you both smiling and crying, absolutely loved it. ( )

Ash Winters suffers from clinical depression which landed him in the hospital after a suicide attempt. His friends love him but are worn out with his needs. He's also a successful author whose boyfriend left him so he's lonely. But Darian Taylor, the Essex model want-to-be, is not his type and Ash can't leave his one-night stand's room fast enough. Ash is posh and Darian is - not. However, Darian is handsome, loyal, charming, and exactly what Ash needs, even if he doesn't want to admit it. Ash can be just mean and he's determined to push Darian away anyway.
Mr. Hall is such a wonderful writer. He's literate and his descriptions are dreamy or realistic, as needed. He's dealing with a serious subject here and does a superb job of it. I loved Darian's Essex accent and dialogue though I admit I had to reread some sentences to get the context. Ash and Darian are an odd pair but perfect together, exactly what the other needs. This is a lovely book. ( )
