It has almost nothing in the way of interesting ideas, and the plot is just a series of captures and escapes, rinse and repeat. But it always keeps moving, and it features an amusingly oblivious hero. ( )

a red martian man goes to rescue a martian woman who has been kidnapped. In the process he falls in love with another, discovers yet another crazed, world domineering wannabe and yet another mad scientist. Everything works out in the end. Burroughs uses the word indubitably". How pretentious." ( )

Edgar Rice Burrougs did it again! This is the seventh Barsoom book, and still this book is a pleasure to read. Once more Burroughs created situations, persons and communities on Barsoom that are novel and intersting enough to give you a pleasant time while reading about them. It is difficult to realise that this book was written about 100 years ago. It is still fresh as were it written nowadays.
In this book the "I" is a native Martian (although his way of thinking is very "earthly" and this, but only this, could be a minor point of criticism) and once more John Carter plays only a very small role.
If you like this kind of books, read it! If you don't you won't even see this review. So I guess you do like this kind of "pulp fiction". Whatever! It is pure reading pleasure. This is in fact one of the best Barsoom books. However, there are four more to come, so I can't be certain how the rest is. What I am certain of, is that I will read them all! ( )

A sorozat 7. kötetében számomra kissé meglepő módon megint új főhősünk van, Tan Hadron, aki a korábbi főszereplőkkel ellentétben nem földi származású, hanem vörös marsi harcos. A történet meglehetősen hasonlít a korábbiakra: Tan Hadron szerelmes (a természetesen gyönyörű) Sanoma Torába, aki bajba keveredik ( elrabolják ) így a főhős a szokásoknak megfelelően a Mars újabb részeit felfedezve küzdhet a kiszabadításáért.

Újdonság, hogy a sorozat korábbi eszetlenül hősies karaktereivel szemben Hadron időnként szinte már gyávának tűnik. Egy alkalommal például amikor 30 vérszomjas ellenfelet kellene megtámadnia inkább elgondolkodik, hogy van-e ennek bármilyen értelme és inkább egy rejtekajtón távozik.

Sajnos a korábbi néhány kötet érdekes sci-fi ötleteivel szemben túl sok eredeti sci-fi motívum nincs ebben a regényben, talán a nyomkövető rakéta leírása tűnt egyedül érdekesnek. ( )
