Husband-and-wife team Sam and Remi Fargo are in Mexico, when they come upon a remarkable discovery: the skeleton of a man clutching an ancient sealed pot, and within the pot, a Mayan book, larger than anyone has ever seen. The Mayan Secrets is the 5th book in the Sam & Remi Fargo series, the book commences with the couple finishing up a shark tagging expedition off the coast of Mexico when an earthquake hits the Mexican region around Tapachula (close to the border of Guatemala). During their efforts to help with the disaster they stumble upon an ancient Mayan temple which contains a treasure trove of information.

Along comes a nefarious character and the romp across Guatemala commences seeing our famous treasure hunting couple join local Mayan descendants to protect their small town from looting and exploitation, as well as fight to preserve the other archaeological sites revealed by the original temple.

I found it to be one of the better books in the series and enjoyed the detailed opening sequence. ( )

Remi and Sam Fargo were on a shark tagging expedition in Mexico, when an earthquake devistated southern Mexico and Guatemala. Being aboard a large yacht, and being extremely wealthy, the Fargos decided to fill their boat with medical, food and other needed supplies. Taking along doctors, they headed south to areas where roads were inaccessible. While making their last aid delivery up a volcano, they stumbled upon an unknown Mayan shrine. In the shrine they found a mummy holding a sealed jar. In the jar was a Mayan codex, now only the 5th codex known to exist. Photos were taken and somehow managed to reach the notice of an exc Edinburgh greedy heiress. This heiress tracked the Fargos back to their home in California. This heiress tries to buy the codex, which is illegal to buy or sell. The Fargos head back to Guatemala to try to verify information found in the codex. The Fargos face danger at every turn, from drug lords, to assassins, to angry Mayan descendants. This was a very fast moving fun read. Actually one of the best Cussler novels which I have read, to date. ( )

Fargo adventures again! Author(s) have done lots of homework on Mayan sites and relics--that's apparent: I know more now than I did before reading this. One wonders; however, about the truth of it all. There's a little filler, like when the two of them float the underground river--you know they'll make it because this is adventure #5 of many.. So, no suspense there. Characters? we learn more about Sam and Selma shines as always. Sarah Allersby stars as Cruella DeVille. Fun, brainless, read. ( )

This is my first time reading a two author Clive Cussler book. Normally, I would not have. It annoys me, that you are interested in an author and he hands off an idea to another writer. So I normally don't buy or read these.

That being said, it was a great story. I wouldn't call it a four star, but I would give it 3.5 if that were available. Thomas Perry did a wonderful job.

What kept this story under a four for me, would be its lack of ah-ha's. An ah-ha to me is when a book surprises me and makes my goosebumps bristle. There were no surprises here. Just a good 3.5 story. ( )

Who doesn't appreciate a cheesy Cussler adventure every once in awhile? An uber-rich gorgeous Super Couple with every skill, weapon, resource and ally has an ancient Mayan secret fall into their lap. Enter: cunning villain. Suddenly, the protagonists set their very-important lives aside to single-handedly discover all the remaining lost cities and treasures of the Mayan world. No sweat. I did appreciate the amount of research done on the Mayan, which I'm quite interested in myself. Corny and predictable, I admit I liked it from start to end. ( )
