This book pulled me in right from page 1, Maggi Myers had a really strong opening in the first chapters. It was hard reading these first pages of the book about the abuse a very young Elizabeth Bradshaw had to endure from a family friend. Perhaps weird to say but the author did a magnificent job there describing this, it was painful when you can see it through her eyes and she pulled me into the book with this gripping start of the story. It’s not all heartbreak because Beth is also blessed with some people who will fight for her, who would slay dragons for her, like Tommy, an older family friend who ultimately saves Beth from the horrible life she is living. When she’s with him, with pops and gran she feels good, they’re her home. She also meets Tommy’s nephew Ryan during the summer in Iowa and he does not know anything so she can be herself with him and feel like a normal teenager, even experiencing loving someone for the first time. But then her mother wants to make amends and takes her away from Ryan. They grow up apart, living their lives, but never stopped thinking about each other. It’s really touching. This story shows the story of Beth and she’s a survivor, even though it has heartbreak and sadness in it, it shows happiness and love too. This book is real, that is the best way I can think of to put it. There are a million words floating around in my head right now, it's so hard to form coherent thoughts. Amazing, gut-wrenching, fantastically written, down to earth, full of love and adoration, redemption, honest. The character of Beth just exudes strength and confidence. To have endured everything she did, and to come out of it like she did. I know the fact that she had people she could trust and lean on, but for the most part, it was all her. Everyone should have a Tommy in their life, and especially a Ryan. I cannot wait to see what this author puts out next, as I will be first in line to devour it! ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Fourteen-year-old Beth Bradshaw is trapped in a nightmare. Her parents, both cocaine addicts, party nonstop, failing to notice that Drew, a frequent guest in their home, has been spending time in young Beth's bedroom. But when longtime family friend Tommy comes to visit, he instantly knows something is wrong. After catching Drew in the act, Tommy whisks Beth off to the only safe place she has ever known: her grandparents' home in Iowa. Safe with Gran, Pops, and Tommy, Beth can pretend to be a normal teen. As she bonds with Tommy's nephew Ryan over rock music, their friendship blossoms into an exhilarating first romance. But Ryan doesn't know the full story behind Beth's move to Iowa. Years later, when a family tragedy unearths clues about her past, Beth must decide whether to share the one piece of herself that she's kept hidden...or risk losing her true love forever.
