"Twenty-two-year-old Ruby Rousseau is haunted by memories of Tarble, the women's college she fled from ten months earlier, and the painful love affair that pushed her to the brink of tragedy. When a suitcase belonging to a former classmate named Beth arrives on her doorstep, Ruby is plunged into a dark mystery. Beth has gone missing, and the suitcase is the only tangible evidence of her whereabouts. Inside the bag, Ruby discovers a tattered copy of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, the book she believes was a harbinger of her madness. Is someone trying to send her a message-- and what does it mean? The search for answers leads to Tarble. As Ruby digs into Beth's past, she has no choice but to confront her own-- an odyssey that will force her to reexamine her final days at school, including the married professor who broke her heart and the ghosts of illustrious writers, dead by their own hand, who beckoned her to join their tragic circle" -- from author's web site.… (mere)

This book runs along so many borders...it's a bit like a beach read, but a bit deeper because of the literary references and the better writing (especially in terms of dialogue). Then, it becomes a bit of a thriller....exciting, but somewhat implausible. So, I'm not sure how to rate it.

Ruby has left college in her final semester because of a bad love affairs that pushed her to the brink of sanity. She is healing back at home with her mother when a suitcase of a former classmate is accidentally delivered to her. And that classmate is missing. Ruby is compelled to return to college and confront her past.

Overall, I liked it. ( )

The ending really went off the rails, but it was entertaining up until that point. ( )

I've had a run of books that start very interesting but get boring pretty quickly. This was one of them ( )

Good Until the Ending

Most of this book is excellent. Beautifully written, with great insights into the thoughts of a young woman in this situation. There are many instances of professors taking advantage of students like this, probably at every school. The story of how these young women work through their emotions is fascinating, but I wish the author had left it at that. The addition at the end of a crazy woman with a gun, one who wears many disguises (to fill in several deep plot holes), ruined the book for me. It was totally unbelievable and dragged a sensitive, emotionally genuine story into the realm of cliche and cheap thrills.
