In this time of easy internet research a travel guide has to provide more than basic information to stay in the game. This Lonely Planet guide does just that. The color pictures are beautiful and intriguing and the fold-out map will find a place in our daypack. But it's the completeness of their offering that convinced me that this is the best guide for us.
'Discover Spain' begins with a plan your trip section. Their detailed list of Top 25 experiences helped us narrow our focus to Madrid and Barcelona with perhaps a side visit to Toledo. This was reinforced by the discussion of Spain's top itineraries. We'd hoped to travel in late winter/early spring to keep within our budget, but a visit to the 'When to Go' page convinced us that April will probably be best for us. Then we used their 'Get Inspired' page to find books, CD's and DVD's to keep us in the mood.
Like many similar guides, the book is divided into sections based on geography. The regional chapters have large color pictures, a bit of local history, maps, walking guides, and the usual information of lodging, food, activities, transportation, etc. An added bonus are the 'local knowledge' pages that give tips for everything from the best way to visit sites to the ways to eat like a local. 'Need to Know' pages warn of such things as museum closings and even when to buy football tickets.
My biggest complaint about guides in recent years is that some read as though they were researched from afar with a few calls to the local chamber of commerce. 'Discover Spain' has an authentic feel. I know a great deal more about visiting Spain than I did before I picked this one up.
