WHO WOULD WANT THOSE APPLES ANYWAY? is an enchanting picture book based on three-year-old Laura Griscom's questions about agricultural pesticides, boldly illustrated by T. Scot Halpin. A bug problem in Laura's garden sends her to a commercial farm in search of advice. A friendship with a farm worker's child leads to discussions about what shoppers support with their decisions at the marketplace. Laura wonders why so many farmers & consumers make unhealthy choices. By deciding that bugs "have very TEENY little teeth," this curious child reframes a dilemma, & avoids the use of pesticides on her tiny crop. She & her sister decide that the perfect looking CONVENTIONAL produce isn't attractive after all; they want the same pear that the bug tasted, because "bugs are very smart" & "it's OK to share." From ecology to aesthetics to economics, this book is an excellent resource for parents & teachers; a non-threatening way to introduce the hidden consequences of food production to future consumers. "...Strikes just the right note, makes all the points & is beautifully written."--Dr. Marion Moses. Share Publishing, 3130 Alpine Road, Suite 200-1009, Portola Valley, CA 94028.
