Den usædvanlige alliance mellem heksen Diana og vampyren Matthew vækker had og modstand i slægterne. Hvis de skal have en fælles fremtid, haster det med at finde de manglende sider i Livets Bog, som de tidligere har søgt i fortiden.

Things I loved:

Diana is the hero. Truly. She doesn't need saving but it was also organic and not a Mary-Sue situation and I loved that. (Yes, run-on)

Gallowglass.

Chris & Miriam's science banter.

Well-supported arguments. Debate. Intellectual discussion.

Babies!

I understand completely why some people were disappointed, but I wasn't! Issues people seem to have had:

Lack of secrecy. Kind of hard to hide a pregnancy. When the creature world will be hunting you anyway, why not at least tell your story to try to make them see your side?

Too many characters: I do agree with this one. I wanted a vampire family tree to consult while reading. If you need to introduce new characters, some of the old ones might need to step back...

Disappointing "big reveal:" I think anything bigger than what Harkness chose would have seemed forced and fake. My goodness, look how crazy Diana's magic gets...

Many questions left unanswered. Really, it just felt like maybe some more books could come eventually. I am totally supportive of that! ( )

Probably my favorite read so far this year. Deborah Harkness writes a book that has many varied and intriguing layers. The romance is perfect and not overdone, the historical aspect is perfectly researched without being excessive and even the science which in general bores me I found myself being fascinated by. I cannot express how much I love this book its characters and the author. Diana and Matthew are simply gorgeous characters that are both hyper real and supremely supernatural. This book was a perfect ending to the trilogy but also left enough unresolved bits that I could see spinoff books being written, I hope. Gallowglass has my vote for his very own book. ( )

SPOILERS - This is the third and last book in the All Souls trilogy. You do need to have read the previous 2 books to keep up to date with everything that happens in this book. Basically this book tells the story of Diana and Matthew - a witch and a vampire respectively - and their journey to discover why they could produce children (twins) when all of creature lore says they should not be able to. The answer turns out to be in the JUNK DNA!! I give the whole trilogy 5 stars!! ( )

Harkness, Deborah. The Book of Life. All Souls No. 3. Viking Adult, 2014.
In The Book of Life, the book, a.k.a. Ashmole 782, is finally reassembled in a most unusual way. The villains are dealt with after a good deal of trouble, the babies are born, the fire dragon is dealt with, and Matthew and Diana, back in their own time, finally resolve their power-sharing issues and resolve some serious political squabbles. The alchemical formula is complete: sex, violence, and the paranormal, with a little history tossed in for flavor. Demons still get short shrift. The book could be 50 pages shorter, but Deborah Harkness gives her readers just what they crave. I also appreciate the detail that Ashmole 782 is an actual manuscript that has been missing from the Bodleian library for years. Four stars for satisfying expectations. ( )
