I wanted to like this book. I've wanted to like all the author's books and yet I haven't. Yet I keep reading them. Anyway, the story focuses on a young intern in DC during election season and the trouble she finds herself in when she has an affair with the President. It seemed to be a fictionalized version of the Clinton/Lewinsky affair right down to secret recordings. Mostly it was just a cautionary tale on why you don't get involved with married people, especially those in powerful places and you never EVER know who you can trust with your deepest darkest secrets. I didn't find any of the characters likeable but that's not really a complaint, just an observation. The characters don't always need to be likeable for me to like a book but I think it may have helped this one along.

Received from Net Galley. ( )

If you were too young or clueless to remember the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal, then you will enjoy this book. Yet even though I remember very clearly the scandal I still cringed while reading this book. I cringed because it is the President and he/she needs to conduct themselves so there can be no possible scandal. But it was hard for me to read this book because I kept referring in my mind back to the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal and so I felt like this wasn't very fresh, UNLESS it said "based on a true story" or "based on actual events" but I don't remember reading that. Also, on the back of the book, reviews kept saying it was funny. I didn't think it was funny at all. Very well written and I do enjoy these authors. ( )

A novel not-so-loosely based on semi-current events by the authors of "The Nanny Diaries", about a young White House intern who inadvertently enters into a clandestine affair with a Clintonesque POTUS, which eventually becomes a nationwide scandal and the fuel for an impeachment trial when the two are outed. Not nearly as compelling and well-written as the authors' breakout debut novel, this is predictable and often loosely scripted. I had to wonder while reading it if Monica Lewinski had happened to read it and what her reaction was. There are flashes of the authors' signature snark and satisfying dialogue, but on the whole this is their least successful novel that I've read. ( )

It was a great book, not diminished in anyway by the fact that it is almost completely pulled from the Monica Lewinsky affair. The only issue I had was, because this book was fiction after all, that the President still got away with it, while the girl suffered by herself. One would hope that at least in fiction justice could be served. ( )

Loosely based on the Monica Lewinsky/Bill Clinton situation. Hilarious book - highly recommended. ( )
