Mystery. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:

The Weir family has just arrived in Dusk, North Carolina, one of the most haunted cities in America, to scope out some of the town's 127 reported "paranormal properties," which just happens to be the name of their own ghost hunting show: Paranormal Properties. What Jake Weir doesn't know, and what his parents could never imagine, is that Jake can see ghosts! And hear them. And talk back to them! This talent comes in handy when he runs into Dusk's oldest, most famous ghost: Frank Barrone, a one-time lounge singer made famous by his booze-soaked ballad, "Barroom Eyes."

Frank was gunned down by a local mobster in 1951 and has been searching for his killer ever since. When he learns that Jake can see and hear him, Frank makes young Jake a deal: if Jake will help Frank find his killer, Frank will help his parents find a ghost to film for their upcoming Halloween Special on Public Access TV. Jake enlists the only friend he's made in Dusk, an overweight tomboy nicknamed "Tank," to help him track down Frank's killer. As clues emerge and old leads heat up, Frank and Jake learn they make quite a team. But will Jake find Frank's killer? And will Frank find a real haunted house in time for the Halloween special?

Good story for anyone who enjoys ghosts and CSI. I'm not a young adult but I enjoyed the story and the characters. I did find that it started slowly, but I was able to finally get through it and enjoyed it very much.

Jake moves around with his parents, ghosthunters for their own small-time television show. Though they are fervent in their search for life after life, he is not convinced, until meeting the unfortunate murder victim Frank in the latest town. Frank was a lounge singer in the 40s and asks Jake to help him find closure by solving his murder.
The book is intended for middle schoolers, but I found the writing and the story to be thin enough that even a reader who has not read widely would see the author trying too hard. The dialogue sounds like no one this age I've ever heard, and all of the details having to do with Frank and his time in the past were so corny and stereotypical. There's a strange plot point regarding Jake's best friend (with whom he becomes close friends in just a few days in another series of unbelievably written exchanges of middle school speak) that ends up with the friend conveniently being adopted by the family, in a weird contrivance to "keep the gang together" for sequels. In all, I encourage readers to look elsewhere - perhaps with Zilpha Keatley Snyder, John Bellairs, or Lemony Snicket.

Jake Weir is used to hearing about ghosts...he just isn't used to actually hearing them. When his ghost-hunting family moves to Dusk, North Carolina to film for their TV show "Paranormal Properties" Jake is surprised to find Frank Barrone, a dead 50's lounge singer, asking him for help. As Jake's parents search for evidence of ghosts, Jake is searching for Frank's killer...

I enjoyed the mystery in this book and it was a really fast read! The only reason it wasn't five stars was because it felt like everything finished up too nicely. They discovered Frank's killer through a diary, his friend's dad passed away and his family adopted her very quickly...I'm sure it was so she could join him for book two when it comes along (which I will happily read!), but it just felt too perfect. With so many gory supernatural books and movies out, "Paranormal Properties" was a breath of fresh air. Filled with interesting characters, humor, and a bit of sadness when Tank loses her father, I found that this book was fun to read. The main characters were interesting and well described. In fact, I found them to be believable as young teenagers who didn't want to believe in the unbelievable until it practically fell on them. Frank, the ghost in question, was quite a character. Constantly playing pranks when all he really wanted to do was to find out who had murdered him back in 1951. The story moved along smoothly and I didn't lose interest at all. I especially liked the section where Frank was singing in his old night club and was boarded up. As he sang, Jake saw the place the way that it was in the 1950s. He even met some of Frank's friends. While the old care taker only saw the place as it was. I enjoy a good ghost story and I felt this one was more enjoyable than most. Congrats to Tracy Lane on a good job!!! ( )

Thank you Library Thing! I love being a part of the Early Reviewers! This book was great, the story and characters were very enjoyable. I love a good ghost story and this one, even though it is a young reader’s book, kept me interested and entertained. My boyfriend’s youngest is an avid reader and actually borrowed it before I finished it. She enjoyed it as well. It's always wonderful to be able to share a great read with the kids and then be able to talk about it with them. This story would make a good story to read aloud (it's not terribly scary) to the younger ones as well. Great for all ages!! ( )
