A great survival story! The focus is more on the action, less on the people, but they were given enough depth to make you invested in the story. My favorite part was all the details about rescue equipment and how search and rescues work. ( )

The true story of three veteran sailors who embarked on a lifetime dream journey across the Atlantic when a large, violent storm wrecked their sailboat and left them stranded in a damaged lifeboat. The text details the dramatic story of the U.S. Coast Guard rescue team that risked their lives in a dangerous storm to save the three men. Epilogue.

I had first heard this story first hand from one of men rescued. Rudy Snel was a member of my investment club and at one of meetings shortly after his rescue, he showed us the video taken from the Coast Guard helicopter. This is an amazing adventure story that educates one on the power of the ocean and nature.

It also is evidence of the skill and dedication of the men & women who serve in the US Coast Guard. Imagine dropping into a raging ocean with waves rising to 90 feet, unhooking from the line to the helicopter and swimming to a raft and then swimming away from the raft to lift the victim into the rescue basket. The rescue swimmer did this three times and almost drowned himself because he was in the water so long.

Tougias interviewed all the participants. The chronicle he puts together of the sailboat's experiences as the storm hit and became worse is gripping and frighting. The three sailors in retrospect made a list of six things that if done differently or at a moment other than when they did, they would not have survived. An example is that Rudy grabbed three emergency flares as he left the boat and though two failed to work, the one that did caught the eye of one of the searchers and led the C-130 to the raft.

A gripping read that I could not put down Recommended. The author has other books about rescues that I am sure would be equally good reads. ( )
