A very enjoyable classic spy novel, continuing the Cold War. My only issue with it is Dominica’s ability to see colors around people. It felt like cheating to me. ( )

This spy novel makes for an interesting read, especially in the context of Russian spying being in the news in past few years. Overall, I found this book interesting but I'm not quite intrigued enough to continue the series. ( )

It was not the best book ever and had some odd and then sometimes delightful wording choices - but I could not stop reading it. ( )

Finished. Yep. Pretty worthwhile as a very adventurous novel and I presume reasonably accurate depiction of a lot of recent tradecraft. Putin, by the way, makes a number of appearances.

--I'm about 300 pgs in of 500 of "Red Sparrow" by Jason Matthews, a 33 yr CIA officer. It gets a pretty good review from the CIA!

It is surprisingly very good. I almost set it gently against the wall a little ways in, somewhat preposterous, somewhat clunky writing, but damn it gets better and better. I mention the 300 pgs in because there's a new character, nicely drawn, added to the handful of others pretty damn well done. ( )

I'm not a fan of spy stories, as a rule. I have enjoyed LeCarre's although even those can be too much at times. When I do like one it is because of the characters, not the plot. This is one of those times.

Dominika is a Russian spy who is sent to school to learn how to be a honey trap. Actually, a sparrow. She resists the label and the job but goes along as she has few choices. She nevertheless asserts her will to twist some of her assignments.

She is assigned to connect with a CIA spy who has a valuable asset. The Russians do not know who it is and are desperate to find out. That's Dominika's job. Not so interested in playing the particular game she is placed in, she strings them along, giving a bit here and a bit there.

Meanwhile, we dip into the CIA agent's life and times as well. Nathanial Nash is young but experienced and dedicated. He protects his asset obsessively.

There is plenty of intrigue and suspense throughout. The characters, both Russian and American, are fairly believable. They are three-dimensional and complex. A good book for an airplane ride or as bedtime reading - except at night it might be hard to put down. ( )

Although Matthews may have a rose-tinted view of the C.I.A., he is terrifically good on the turf wars and enervating bureaucracy of espionage. There are several digs at the F.B.I. — including an operation in Finland botched by the excitable feds — which his former colleagues will doubtless cheer to the rafters.
