Howard and Anna Cox Brinton met doing Friends relief work in Germany after World War I in Europe and devoted their lives to nurturing Quakerism, social activism, peacemaking and peacemakers in the United States and Asia. The Brintons lived the Quaker Peace Testimony as educators, writers, activists, and as directors of Pendle Hill. Howard’s writings are integral to an understanding of the Quaker peace movement of the twentieth century and today, as Friends continue to seek the balance between their outward social activism and their inward spiritual life. PHP #372 Manousos explains the formative roles of Howard and Anna Brinton in 20th century American Quakerism in this biography. Howard Brinton's prolific writings educated Friends about Quaker theology, practice, history, and testimony; he articulated the theological basis for Quaker pacifism and social activism that is still fundamental to Friends. The Brintons led Pendle Hill for many years and worked for peace with the American Friends Service committee. This pamphlet is interesting and informative.
