Sleepy Pendoodle is about a young girl who finds a puppy. She wants the puppy to open his eyes, but she does not know how to help him. She asks her uncle for advice and he says," Scrub your hands, put him on your knees and shout Sleepy Pendoodle!" After trial and error the puppy finally opens his eyes and is excited to see the little girl. I related to this story because I raised a puppy at a young age. I believe this book would be great in the classroom because most children are learning about the responsibility and love that comes with having a pet. ( )

Sleepy Pendoodle is about a little girl who finds a puppy in an alley, and asks her uncle how to make him open his eyes. When she finally remembers his instructions, she gets to run around with the puppy. This is a story that many young children can relate to. ( )

I enjoyed this book because I am a dog lover. I feel this would be great to read in the classroom to students to talk about responsibilities and the importance of listening and caring for others and animals.

Chock full of warm sentiment and playful language, this charmer will draw smiles from even the most stonehearted. A child finds an abandoned puppy, so new that its eyes aren’t yet open. When she asks her uncle what to do, he advises her to stroke it and say, “Open your eyes, Sleepy Pendoodle.” Those instructions get transmogrified.... Placed on the pages with almost no background detail, Vivas’s figures dance about each other, the spiky-haired child and her fuzzy, golden pup both pictures of happy exuberance. ...

This winning volume captures all the excitement and mystery of a child bonding with a new pup. After the girl narrator discovers a newborn stray pooch in an alley, she gives him some TLC. ... But why won't the puppy open his eyes? The girl then turns to her uncle for advice, who tells her, "You stroke him on the back and say, 'Open your eyes, Sleepy Pendoodle!..." She tries hard to remember her uncle's words as she runs home, but just can't get it right. ... Doyle's (The Bold Boy) word play heightens the exuberant fun, the story brims with energy, and Vivas portrays a heroine with warmth and gusto to spare. Ages 3-6.
