"Never go back--but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. Never Go Back is #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child's new novel of action-charged suspense starring "one of the best thriller characters at work today" (Newsweek). Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had. Reacher is there to meet--in person--the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone. But it isn't Turner behind the CO's desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about. When threatened, you can run or fight. Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs. Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces--and makes him question who he is, what he's done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road. Praise for #1 bestselling author Lee Child and his Jack Reacher series "Child is a superb craftsman of suspense."--Entertainment Weekly "The truth about Reacher gets better and better."--Janet Maslin, The New York Times"--… (mere)

Oh, I don't know what to say about Lee Child, or Jack Reacher, or this series. It's candy, pure and simple. There is nothing to recommend this book to others, except that I'm constantly amazed at how Child manages to keep the pace of action moving like it does. He's consistent, too, so you alway know what you're going to get. That's why only three stars-- I liked the book, enjoyed it, but it was entirely predictable. Again, a selling point.

In some ways the Jack Reacher books are like television. At least, television as it used to be. They seem designed to do no more than hold your attention while its got you. Any attempt to think critically about these kinds of books will bring up the inevitable: why does all this bad shit happen to this one guy? But that's not really the point, I guess. Like the television I grew up on, it isn't designed to last, but rather to be, in the moment.

There are a few examples in the Jack Reacher series that stand out, and I can't say I won't reread the series. It has everything I want from a comfortable, end of the day reading task. Nothing too taxing, fast-paced narrative where there are no moments for contemplation. Sometimes, that just what I need. ( )

Jack goes back to the 110th MP unit to see the C.O., whose voice he liked only to find she has been relieved under command and jailed. Then he is accused of two separate crimes and conscripted, and jailed; however, he engineers a jailbreak and goes on the lam with the C.O. to determine why they have been targeted. Enjoyed this one. Lee Child has brought Jack Reacher back again in this continuing storyline. Following his latest exploits, Reacher returns to Rock Creek, the place of the 110th he used to command when he was in the service, just to meet the current CO, a lady he had only talked to on the phone. From the time he arrives, things get interesting for Reacher as he finds out he has two very big problems to deal with: both of which require him to face justice or run.

I was a bit excited to get my hands on another Reacher novel, but was a bit disappointed with the ending. There is an issue about Reacher being brought back into active duty, but I didn't see any dismissal at the end of the story. Maybe it is an opening for another novel? Either way, the rest of the story is regular Reacher where there is an occasional fight, a little female companionship, and some bad guys getting what they deserve. Great for a day read! ( )

Thanks Reacher... now whenever I'm uncertain, I always choose left. ( )

Eventually they put Reacher in a car and drove him to a motel a mile away, where the night clerk gave him a room, which had all the features Reacher expected, because he had seen such rooms a thousand times before. There was a raucous through-the-wall heater, which would be too noisy to sleep with, which would save the owner money on electricity. There were low-watt bulbs in all the fixtures, likewise. There was a low-pile carpet that after cleaning would dry in hours, so the room could rent again the same day. Not that the carpet would be cleaned often. It was dark and patterned and ideal for concealing stains. As was the bedspread. No doubt the shower would be weak and strangled, and the towels thin, and the soap small, and the shampoo cheap. The furniture was made of wood, all dark and bruised, and the television set was small and old, and the curtains were gray with grime.
All as expected. Nothing he hadn’t seen a thousand times before.
