Among the many books written on the theme of liberation theology, this study--the fifth volume in the Regents Study Guides series--is unusual in several ways. First, it sets out to transfer some key principles of liberation theology, as they emerged in Latin America, into the very different context of Europe today. Second, in conversation with the Bible, it aims to make clear the links between liberation and evangelism, two concepts that are often fostered in quite separate theological camps. Finally, it asks the Church to face the challenges of the New Europe developing with the European Union and the collapse of old-style communism. This study is wide-ranging, informative, deeply biblical, and always passionate. It will be of interest to both Americans and Europeans who want to understand what is happening in the Europe with which they will be increasingly involved as the new century proceeds.
