Cute, but... let's maybe not teach kids to breach consent for personal gain, maybe? ( )

Alexander is a real mouse who has befriended a toy mouse, Willy. This magical friendship serves as a reminder to young readers to embrace who they are and to always strive for what is best for themselves and the people around them. The vibrant illustrations in the book by far my favorite of Leo Lionni's illustrations and they unsurprisingly received a Caldecott Honor medal. ( )

This story is about Alexander, a little mouse, who meets a toy mouse in the house that he lives in. He envies the toy mouse and wishes he were like him. He learns of a magical lizard that could grant his wishes. When he brings the lizard what it wants to get his wish granted, he wishes something else. He wishes his toy friend to be real like him instead. He was worried about his toy friend who was put out with the trash toys because their owner got new toys on her birthday. Like many other stories, Lionni uses a lot of nature-inspired illustrations. He has different types of trees and a lot of texture in the ground. He uses many different patterns on the items. For example, he applies different patterns to toys, wallpaper, and cloths. He has a kind message. Instead of the mouse using his wish for himself, he uses it to help his friend. ( )

This story is about a mouse named Alexander and a wind up mouse named Willy. Alexander desperately wants to be like Willy so he can be loved and not hated by the family whose house he lives in. He searches for days for a magic purple pebble that a wizard will use to turn him into a wind up mouse. In the end, he realizes that the grass ins't always greener on the other side. Ultimately, he saves Willy by turning him into a real mouse, and accepts that who he is isn't half bad. ( )
