I only made it to 70%.

I’ll start off by saying I really liked the Archer brothers. They have a strong relationship and I really liked all of their interactions.

The romance had some cute and sweet moments and I wanted to like it. However, there were enough negative elements that kept pulling me out of the story that I just stopped.

The biggest detractor for me was ex-boyfriend Gabe. Although the real world unfortunately contains boyfriends that turn into stalkers and guys that are privileged, protected, self-entitled assholes I am not interested in reading about them as part of my entertainment. It is one of my least favorite romance plot devices, and unfortunately it’s used heavily in this book. I’m also frustrated that Shaw keeps declining to get the police involved or at least clearly document everything that’s happening.

Related to my dislike of the whole Gabe storyline, there were a lot of really toxic people in this book. Ex-boyfriend Gabe, both of Shaw’s divorced parents and Rule’s grieving mother are all prominent characters driving the plot... and they’re all really mean and nasty. Perhaps if I finished the book I would have a more nuanced feel for these characters, but at 70% in they still felt like 1 dimensional representations of terrible people with no redeeming qualities. It was too toxic for me to enjoy. On top of these main characters, a lot of negative side interactions are included. Mean popular girls from high school, mean vapid girls from work, desperate ink bunnies, etc.

I also didn’t enjoy the cliches enforced by this book. Almost any other pretty girl (besides Shaw and her roommate) are described as trashy or over made up or conceited or slutty or desperate or aggressively mean. The female half of all the one night stands are often described pretty negatively, while Rule and his friends get a lot more leeway. That’s often a feature of bad boy romances, so not a surprise but it still rubs me the wrong way.

There were also some facets of Shaw’s character and point of view that pulled me out of the book. I guess I’ve never met rich women/teenagers who don’t wear jeans—so I was often confused by the descriptions of Shaw’s outfits and how she was always wearing slacks and pearls... in college? It’s quite possible I just haven’t met the right people :) That’s a minor point though. There was one scene in the book where Shaw meets her roommate at a coffee shop to catch up. There is a table of “geeks” sitting nearby and I hated how their reactions were described... totally unnecessary to the scene and emphasized that in most scenes of the book everyone was always focused on how hot the main characters were.

The scene is introduced with Ayden already sitting at a table in the cafe. "A table full of geeky-looking guys was trying to get her attention by talking and laughing loudly, but she seemed oblivious.” After talking for a bit Shaw describes this poignant pause in her conversation with Ayden: “I laughed a little and scraped some of the foam off my drink with my finger and popped it in my mouth. I think the table of geeks gasped but I wasn’t sure...” I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Over an hour later when Ayden and Shaw leave, the scene wraps up with this lovely bit: “We left on a hug, which I’m pretty sure caused the table of geeks to spontaneously break into juvenile erection territory”. Because this is all written from Shaw’s perspective, it made her feel sooo shallow and performative. Shaw and Ayden are having a heart felt conversation about their love lives and for some reason we keeping seeing these glimpses of how she imagines the stereotypical “geeky” guys not being able to handle how flaming hot she and her friend are. Not cool. Also vomit inducing.

Lastly, kind of an offshoot from the last point. Shaw and Rule are both so f**ing gorgeous that everyone else stares at them and wants to get in their pants in just about every scene. I get that some people are really, really hot, but it still felt excessive to me.

Pretty good; The characters aren't terrible, but the story is pretty predictable. I probably would have liked it better if the girl wasn't so NEEDY! Geez! ( )

I hate first person books, I really do. However there are two authors that have made me just absolutely love it. Jay Crownover and T.H. Snyder. This book is the first in it's series, and I couldn't put it down. I also didn't want it to end. That is the sign of a good book in my opinion. Rule is such a badass you really don't want to cross, but when you get to his heart, you realize, he might be bad on the outside, but inside he is the best person ever. So if you haven't read this book, what are you waiting for?!? ( )

I enjoyed the book. The characters were likeable, the storylines were interesting, and it was tied up neatly at the end. I'm giving 3 stars because of the spelling errors (striped when it should have been stripped, to when it should have been too) and sentence structure; it REALLY got to me. I'd zoom in on it and that takes away from the book. I'm hoping the next book has better editing. ( )

Well written, just very angsty and less sexy than I was expecting. ( )
