Not as deep a world at Mistborn or The Stormlight Archives, but Steelheart starts what promises to be an interesting world, filled with villains and heroes. Unlike the Marvel and DC worlds, heroes in this world are general mortal, while villains have unexpected powers which defy physics. With each power also comes a weakness, which can be used to bring them down. For being as short as this was (half the length of Mistborn), it had an impressive story arc. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes. ( )

I just flew through it. I appreciate very much the fact, that Sanderson went for a different genre this time. One downfall – after reading several of his previous books, I kind of anticipate the plot twists and secrets so many times I'm thinking like "oh wait, there is something wrong with his character... maybe he is [this and that]" so the revelations aren't that epic that when I first read Mistborn.

By the way, I was wondering why almost all of the epics are villains and then I saw an interview with Sanderson, in which he was saying, that when he travelled on highway and some car overtook him, his first reaction was like "if I had a superpower, I would blow you up" – and it makes sense I guess. Only a few people don't have this kind of thoughts and wouldn't use them in this way. ( )

I listened to this book on CD - most of it on a family vacation to Arizona and back. I thought that it was pretty entertaining, although it has a great deal of similarity to other Sanderson novels, especially Mistborn. I thought that the reader was quite good and engaging - it is weird to have male readers do female voices (and vice versa). The reader is MacLeod Andrews.

The story is a super hero story with a twist, which I found enjoyable. The family was pretty engrossed with the book.

A bit of meta commentary - three stars may seem a bit harsh, but three stars indicates that I liked the book, which is exactly how I felt about it. Star inflation for ratings seems to be something that can quickly get out of control. ( )

Holy Calamity, this was a good book! Supervillains vs. ordinary folks. It was epic. Pure and simple. Brandon Sanderson is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. ( )
