Pinkerton has begun the teething process and is busily chewing on everything he can find, Mother has taken the piano teacher home, so Pinkerton’s little girl dresses him in a Stegosaurus costume and takes him to the museum for her class’s Dinosaur Day. Everyone in Ms. McDuff’s class is dressed as a dinosaur. The museum director, Doctor Zandorfosaurus, an expert on prehistoric life, is showing the children around the museum and telling them about the various displays.

Then the Great Dane sees the Diplodocus skeleton on display in the museum. What will happen?

=========

Pinkerton the Great Dane returns in a hilarious new story. Preschool and primary readers are the targeted audience for the simple text, accompanied by full-color wash-and-ink illustrations. Be prepared for a giggle-fest as the rambunctious puppy manages to create chaos and mayhem.

Highly recommended. ( )

Credit for correctly naming the skeleton that looked like a brontosaurus* as a diplodocus. Credit for being funny, in a child-friendly way. Points off for implying that a mammal could be descended from a dinosaur (at least one reviewer here on GR took that as an actual claim, not just an implication). Points off for shrugging away a destroyed tree and piano, and letting a schoolchild be home alone looking after a Great Dane.

Sorry, to sum, I cannot recommend this book. The other Pinkerton stories might be better if the big dog doesn't do quite as much damage.

*no such critter as brontosaurus - bad science if you see it elsewhere. ( )

O seems to like to read this one over and over. It's not the best read and neither I or Dada were thrilled with the illustrations either. ( )

Another cute Steven Kellogg-illustrated story! I enjoyed reading this book to my 2nd graders when dinosaurs were part of the curriculum, and they enjoyed it too. ( )

This book is about the antics of a (gigantic) great dane puppy named Pinkerton. He is going through his teething phase. The characters explain that puppies chew on things when they are losing their puppy teeth and getting their adult teeth. He chews up everything in site and makes quite a mess. The book then describes more about dinosaurs as Pinkerton and his little girl (owner) go to the museum for dinosaur day. The book shows some of the evidence of dinosaurs and gives some basic dinosaur facts. Again, Pinkerton causes more trouble and he sees all the bones in the museum. This book is fun and should appeal to students who love a little mischief in their stories and are interested in dinosaurs.
