There's something in the earth deep below Elise Kavanagh's territory. A shadow is devouring demons and harvesting their souls, and it's coming for Elise next. The Union has an easy way out. They want to send Elise into hiding again with James Faulkner, a powerful witch and the man she's loved for most of her life. But she will never be able to go home again. Greater powers have other plans for Elise and her fabled power as Godslayer--plans that mean surrendering her life and blood to the most powerful demon alive. But if she descends, there's no turning back. Once she gazes into the abyss, it will gaze back into her...and Elise will be damned forever.… (mere)

Nice continuation of the series. For the most part is was a good book. One scene with a weird combo of blood/sex that was... weird. Parts got a little confusing for me on where the gates and wards were. The ending was cool and I'm looking forward to the next book. ( )

Elise is a female terminator....she slays evil and just when you think she's hit the end of the line....oh, but let's not spoil everything.

I started this series as freebies on iTunes and am I glad I stumbled onto them. At first I didn't know if I could stand more than one book where the lead character is so unlikeable. I amend my judgement of her, she broken emotionally and trying to do right by saving the world....who wouldn't be cranky! And then there is James, mysterious James who holds her heart but as no clue how to handle Elise and her emotions.

In this book she kick some major a** and took names. For a woman who avoided emotional entanglements she sure seems to collect men willing to do anything for her. Human, angel, demon...they all just seem to flock to her. Her friendships with nightmares, fiends, and all other assorted demons let's us know she not a mechanical, non-feeling Godslayer. Wish she could find some peace once in a while though.

As for James, how dense can a man be? Of course he would be surprised the depth of Elise's feeling for him. He's let some distance come between him and Elise while he tries to build a normal life. He can't understand why she would avoid him. Now his girlfriend has been relocated to California and he found out he's a daddy. So how will all this pull him further away from Elise?

Thinks it's time to make some popcorn, get a big glass of iced tea and start in on the next book....can't wait!!! ( )

Elise has come through a lot in the last few years and is still reeling - but Reno is her territory and she’s determined to protect it

When a new dark threat rises from beneath, it may be beyond the limited resources she has left to deal with it… especially when she’s so alone. But is she ready to look to the Union for support?

And is this something the Union can deal with? Or can only Elise, the Godslayer, take down this threat? And at what cost?

I swear this series is my white whale. I read a book or two and then blink and S.M. Reine has written 8 squillion books in the same world and part of me thinks “no way can I catch up with them all” and then I’ll read another book in a different series and realise it’s in the same world and declare, that by Ahab’s ghost, I will tackle this whole series.

I imagine a lot of people are going to be very put off by Elise on account that she is pretty much a deeply unpleasant person. And at times for me I was frustrated - not by her exactly but by the people around her - like why are you hanging around this woman? She’s made of terrible and awful! Anthony, James - put some distance between you and her!

But I don’t dislike her. Her life has not been easy - including a lot of flashbacks this book which really bring home why she is called “the god killer” who she is, what her connection with the divine and infernal actually is and her rather terrible experiences because of it. We see her history and early days as a Kopis, and kopides with their high death rate and constant struggle against the various evils of the world. We see her own activities in the past with James when she was much younger hunting terrible monsters.

And even then I kind of love how when hunting down a creature that is eating pigs and human babies she asks “why pigs”. James is all horrified “why babies!” is what he asks - but hey ALL big bad darknessess want to eat babies. It’s what they do. It really does show how even young Elise is thoroughly jaded and worn down by the life she leads. We even see this really nice

Throw in the recent death of Betty who wasn’t just her best friend but kind of the cornerstone of her humanity, the one who made Elise more than just a hunter and we have a wound right to her soul. It’s all really well done to produce a character who is, well, deeply unpleasant - but deeply unpleasant for powerful reasons that really make up her characters

And that isn’t lessened by the sometimes terrible things she has to do in this book coupled with just how utterly overwhelmed she is with the job of running Reno, protecting its inhabitants (including demons - which in itself is something that puts her at odds with not just other Kopides but even James as they can’t accept that chaos =/= evil) and protecting the holy gate.

Throw into this we have a lot of conflicts with the people in Elise’s life - whether that’s Anthony who is probably just too human to be in Elise’s life. Or there’s James who, because of their mystical bond, is just too close and she keeps pushing away (it’s also interesting in that James is built on to have so many more things in his own life as well, perhaps diverging his priorities from Elise and further making her unable to trust him). Her chaotic connection with Tom, a mysterious power who she certainly isn’t able to entirely trust - or even trust at all - and we have a character who is overwhelmed, facing impossible circumstances with little to no actual reliable support network from which to do anything about the dire threats that face her city

From there, I think it really adds an excellent new lens on the Union. In the past and generally through these books it’s easy to see the Union as some kind of shadowy, ill-intentioned, autocratic force that cannot be trusted and should be driven out. But by having a commander who has history with Elise (fraught, of course, but not entirely negative) and emphasising just how many resources they have next to Elise’s completely overwhelmed and generally lonely existence and it’s hard not to see them as having a point on some level. It adds a level of nuance here that works a lot

I also like the expanded world building here even though sometimes it can feel like a LOT and I am a little overwhelmed. There’s been a lot of times when reading the past books - or possibly because it has been a while since I’ve read the last book - where I’ve been kind of lost on the nature of what Elise is, how the divine and infernal interact et al. This does an excellent job of filling in a lot of the gaps, explaining

I wasn't sure about this series when I first started it...I liked it, but I was annoyed because it took a long time for things to be explained. But let me tell you, it's worth the wait! This book totally blew me away. When I got to the end of it I felt like I'd survived an explosion it was so powerful! I told my husband he has to read this series and he can't stop until he reads to the end of this book. I told my son the same. It was really amazing. Some of the best writing I've read in a long time, and definitely one of the most emotionally powerful and gripping stories I've read in ages. Gritty, horrific, mind-blowing ending. I loved it!! The characters and their relationships are complicated, messy, sometimes they are unkind and hurtful. They feel real.

i'm so glad that I bought all the books in the series because I cannot wait to start Dire Blood, the 5th book. ( )

The 4th book in the series, and it's grim. Elise is still trying to save the demons, humans, and angels, but nothing seems to come easy. A hard read, but well worth it.
