Where The Grimm Legacy is part mystery novel, The Wells Bequest is part adventure yarn. A fun, science-y adventure yarn, and a worthy follow-up to The Grimm Legacy, but I admit it didn't quite grab me to the extent that the first book did. That may have something to do with the fact that I'm much better versed in faery tales than I am in 19th century science fiction novels, though.

In any case, I'm still thrilled to have been able to revisit the New-York Circulating Material Repository. ...And if our next trip there involves the Gibson Chrestomancy, I suppose I should bump Neuromancer and Snowcrash a little higher on my to-read list. (If it focuses on the Lovecraft Corpus instead, I think I'm set.) ( )

It felt contrived. ( )

Not as compelling as the first in the series, but that might be because my expectations were higher. I was surprised that it didn't follow the same characters, but I got over it. I enjoyed all of the references to classic science fiction, as well as the discussions of the problems with time travel as a concept. Like The Grimm Legacy, I think this book will send readers towards those classic stories. ( )

“Would you really want to live in a world where only the possible is possible?”
“Shanti Rao had her niece’s snapping black eyes and long thin arms. She wore her black hair pulled back firmly, but I could almost see it scheming to get loose.”
“Maybe that would be a good career choice for me too; mad scientist in a work of fiction.”
Jaya on stopping time: “ I used the subjective startle effect. I induced a moment of emotional anomaly, altering Leo’s experience of relative temporality.”
Leo describing the physical sensation of shrinking: “My whole body itched and tickled inside and out. It felt like someone was crumpling aluminum foil inside my bones.”
