Many of the images in this book are deeply disturbing, from the photographs of emaciated camp inmates to the picture of a Serbian soldier casually kicking the dead body of a recently murdered Muslim woman. Less graphic, but just as chilling, are the many photographs of civilians attempting to conduct their daily lives in the face of the increasingly militarized and brutalized world around them. A moving, and very necessary visual documentation of some of the atrocious human rights violations that characterized the Balkan conflicts, in which the majority of victims were non-combatants. Chuck Sudetic and David Rieff each contributed brief introductory essays, detailing the history of the region and the artistry of the photographer, respectively. But the book is mainly given over to Haviv's photographs, which have appeared in publications such as Newsweek and Paris Match, and which were part of an exhibition that toured the U.S. and Europe in 2000. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Honey brings together some of the top names in reporting on the conflict in the Balkans. Ron Haviv, the first Western journalist to capture Serbian atrocities on film and one of the premier photographic chroniclers of the conflict, offers a selection of photos that bridge the gap between the soldiers and refugees in the Balkans and the stark but dignified reality of everyday life for the Croatian, Serbian, Albanian, Slovenian, and Bosnian people.Chuck Sudetic, the leading correspondent of The New York Times in the former Yugoslavia for much of the recent conflicts, explains the price of war for the peoples of the Balkans and the powerful forces that underlie the cyclical escalations of emotion there. Sudetic portrays a country whose long-held ethnic hatreds have been systematically exploited by two men -- Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia and Franjo Tudjman of Croatia -- who gained power by inciting fierce nationalist passions. Blood and Honey is an unforgettable portrait of life amid the ravages of war. No library descriptions found. |
