"Forced by her family into an engagement with a man she can never abide, Antigone Preston knows only a scandal will save her from a loveless marriage. But knocking a man down to the ballroom floor with her fists brings dangerous consequences. She may have ruined her reputation, but now she's endangered her heart. The son of an earl and a career navy man, Captain William Jellicoe has no interest in the frivolities of London-and even less in the institution of marriage. But there's something steering him toward Antigone. He has never met anyone as brazen and unconventional as...himself. But will he risk it all for a woman who still has the breath of scandal hot on her lips?"--P. [4] of cover.… (mere)

This was bad. Not much of a review, but its about the best I can do with this one. I went with 1 1/2 stars rather than 1 because I liked the 2 main characters a good deal and the story was well-framed. I bet it was a hell of an outline. The problem was that the writing was SO BAD I found it painful to read. I ended up skimming the last 100 pages. I read a lot of historic romance, so the problem is not that I am not accustomed to the overly-flowery. This book has, however, prose not just purple, but also the worst case of thesaurus dipping I have ever seen. Words are misused, people speak as people have never spoken, and the text is rife with expressions that came into being 100 years or more after the period in which this was set. I am moving on to better brain candy. ( )

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I enjoyed the back and forth between Will and Antigone. I found myself smiling quite a bit throughout, even though I seriously wanted to punch her mother pretty much every time she opened her mouth. ( )

I don't know. A book makes me cry and makes me love love love love love love love both protagonists and I'm willing to forgive any minor quibbles. ( )

A BREATH OF SCANDAL by Elizabeth Essex is an interesting Regency historical romance. #2 in "A Reckless Brides novel" series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, "Almost a Scandal". Set in 1814 Sussex,England. Follow, Antigone Preston and Captain William Jellicoe on a journey of forbidden passion, love and secrets. Antigone, is forced in an engagement by her mother, to a much older gentleman, she intends to get out of one way or another. Captain Jellicoe has no desire to marry but must enter society anyway. With moments of laughter, danger, a bit of scandal, and a lot of sexual tension you will not go wrong with "A Breath of Scandal". A delicious romp through Sussex, sizzling with desire, and an adventure or two will leave you breathless and captivated by these delightful, and engaging characters. Fast paced and tension filled from beginning to end. A wonderful read! I can hardly wait for the next installment into "A Reckless Brides" novel series. Received for an honest review from the publisher.
