Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photography, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it's across Massachusetts or across the country. Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing--and terrifying--playground of amusements he calls "Christmasland." Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble--and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx's unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He's on the road again and he's picked up a new passenger: Vic's own son.… (mere)

    It af Stephen King (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: Malevolent entities that prey upon children are the driving force of these creepy, suspenseful horror stories. In both novels, only adults lucky enough to escape the villain's clutches in childhood are later able to battle the evil when it returns.… (mere)

The Shining Girls af Lauren Beukes (alaskayo)
alaskayo: Well: Time-traveling serial killer powered by unexplained forces. You'll see the comparison in many reviews. Shining Girls gets a more mixed reaction, and is unconventional in its structure and uncomfortable violence, but is worth looking into for fans. (The audiobook is fantastic, with a full cast of readers for every character.)… (mere)

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. I remember, a few years back, when Stephen King announced his retirement (obviously a touch premature), I thought, well, who's going to take his place?

Now I have my answer. Without giving anything away, this book simply fires on all cylinders. Characters that really should come across as goofy, instead inspire fear and dread. A plot that's more fantasy and could be silly, instead works very well.

If you enjoy horror, if you enjoy Stephen King at his best, then get this book. It's Joe Hill at the top of his game. ( )

This was a great book, although too much like his father in some parts. I would have liked it to have a little more of that unexpected feel that "Horns" had. Otherwise, this is an excellent book. ( )

Both very disturbing and very clever. This is a book that operates on multiple levels, and I like that. I like the sense of intentionality it carries, the feeling that this is a book with meanings left to convey, rather than pure thrill. Of course, it's a thrilling read as well.

The thing is, I'm not certain I liked it. I enjoyed it, as it balances humor and suspense in equal measure- the reappearance of Chekhov's gun coinciding with the use of the obviously loaded escape directions earned a laugh. This is a book that has fun with meaning.

There's a delightful duality going on here, where the primary story is in opposition with one imposed by external forces (psychiatrists, the police), and the author works that interplay expertly. The conflict between reality and delusion, and which is which, enriches the novel and allows for an additional depth of meaning to be played with.

All that said, I can't say this book is one of my favorites. I'm still somewhat of a newcomer to the horror genre, and haven't settled on a book I can point to as an exemplar of what I like, but I don't think this is it.

At the moment, my opinion is running along the lines of "I'm not sure I like what you've done, but I like that you've done it,"

Still, it's awesome to read something that carries meaning, and this book is a love song (or maybe a murder ballad) to metaphor. ( )

“There’s the physical world . . . but there’s also our own private inner worlds, the world of our thoughts. A world made of ideas instead of stuff. It’s just as real as our world, but it’s inside.”
― Joe Hill

As always my reviews are based off of my true and honest opinion and I do my best to keep all reviews spoiler free.

Vic is good at finding things. Always has been. She imagines a bridge while she rides her bike and crosses the bridge to the place that holds the item she forgot. Then she comes back. Thats how she remembers it. Just like when she was kidnapped my Charles Manx and managed to escape. Thats how she remembers it. Sometimes are memory is wrong though. Now Vic has no choice but to face her memories and sort the real from the false if she wants her son back.

Loved this book. I'm a huge horror fan so this book was a must read the moment I heard of it. I will admit that when I picked up the almost 700 page hardcover book. The task ahead was a bit daunting, but this book read so easy. It interesting from start to finish. I'm already making plans for a reread on audiobook and i'll be keeping my eye out and my fingers crossed for a graphic novel adaption. You will never look at christmas the same again.
The characters in this story are sooo easy to love. They are very flawed, but thats what makes you love them all the more because you can relate. Lou was my favorite character and may be my all time favorite character so far. The ending was in my opinion very satisfying, but not what I would call a happy ending in full, but enough of one. If you are a horror fan then I would definitely recommend this book. ( )

What's good stays good no matter how much of a beating it takes.
She breathed deeply of the scent of decaying fiction, disintegrating history, and forgotten verse, and she observed for the first time that a room full of books smelled like dessert:  a sweet snack made of figs, vanilla, glue, and cleverness.
But everyone also lives in the world inside their own head. An inscape, a world of thought. In a world made of thought--in an inscape--every idea is a fact. Emotions are as real as gravity. Dreams are as powerful as history.
Christmas was almost three months in the rearview mirror, and there was something awful about Christmas music when it was nearly summer. It was like a clown in the rain, with his makeup running.
She thought of mothering, which was really another word for being present and caring what happened to someone.
