When it comes to movie critics Violet Epps is a powerhouse voice. Equally unafraid of big Hollywood names and public opinion, her biting reviews are widely quoted. But when it comes to her own life, Violet finds herself unable to speak up--paralyzed by crippling social anxiety. When a chance encounter at the famous Algonquin Hotel unleashes the feisty spirit of the long-dead Dorothy Parker, the famous literary critic of the 1920s, Violet thinks she is going crazy. But as the rematerialized Mrs. Parker helps her face her fears, Violet realizes how much she has been missing by keeping quiet. It turns out though, that the shade has problems of her own, not the least of which include equal portions of narcissism and pessimism and the inability to move on to her afterlife.… (mere)

This novel provides a heart-warming story enlivened with witticisms from the ghost of Dorothy Parker. The main character, a shrinking violet movie critic, picks up a book at the Algonquin that unleashes the ghost of Dorothy Parker who then begins to get involved in Violet's life. The idea is clever and well-executed. The flow of the book is also noteworthy. Although I was afraid it would be just a form of chick lit, I found myself enjoying the book. ( )

An entertaining premise, but a little less substance than I'd hoped for. Still, an enjoyable way to kill a couple of hours. ( )

This book started out WAY TOO SLOWLY with nothing really happening until I was deep into 100 pages of reading.

Thankfully my patience and persistence paid off. The book picks up and ends quite nicely. The 4 stars reflects the strong finish, but otherwise, if it hadn't gained steam after the first 100 pages, I seriously think the book would have only garnered 2 stars.

A great book if you have the time and patience to plod through all the back story to get to the REAL story. ( )

Anyone else get rape vibes off this book? At the very least, this version of Dorothy Parker is a shitty friend who takes over your body and makes you do things against your nature. The message seems to be, "it's all ok! everything worked out in the end." The real Dorothy Parker deserves better! ( )

I am probably not the target market for this book, but I had heard some online friends praise it, so I decided to buy the Kindle version and read it instead of shoveling my driveway for the 50th time this winter.

Ellen Meister brings Dorothy Parker to life.

I spent most of a snowy afternoon with Dorothy and Victoria Epps. They were good company. This is a well-crafted novel.
