This is a lovely story of the birth of Christ through the perspective of the local birds. ( )

The Christmas Story is told from the perspective of the birds of Bethlehem in this simple picture-book from author/illustrator Tomie dePaola. As they gather together one morning, the avian group share with one another the extraordinary things that have been going on around their village, from the many unusual visitors to the angels singing in the sky. Eventually they hasten to the stable behind the inn, there to see for themselves this newborn babe...

Although I wouldn't describe The Birds of Bethlehem as a particularly strong retelling of the Nativity story, and am not sure what the avian perspective brings to the table, I did find this a sweet book. I think the simplicity of the text, and its repetitive structure, would make it a good selection for younger children. The artwork, done in acrylic paint, is lovely, and I quite enjoyed the final scene, which is vintage dePaola. Recommended to fans of the artist, and to anyone looking for picture-books about the Nativity for younger picture-book audiences. ( )

The Nativity told from a bird's-eye view. A lovely, unique perspective on the Christmas story. ( )
