Goodnight, Canada

"It's bedtime for a boy who lives by the sea on the east coast of Canada. As he settles down, he wonders about other children in his country and the world. Are they going to bed, too? He bids goodnight across Canada, province by province, then up to the territories, with a final goodnight sent out to the world. Goodnight, Canada is a soothing bedtime book that also inspires a sense of community in the very young. As the pages turn on each province and territory, children hear and learn the names of all parts of Canada. The charming art showcases the diversity of the country. Cleverly, distinctive features of each place are incorporated into the beds and bedrooms of the children, with a dreamlike quality. In Newfoundland, the little girl's bed is a boat, rocking on the waves. Shimmering Northern Lights inspire awe in the child going to sleep in Manitoba, surrounded by his stuffed bears (or are those real polar bears?). The bed of a boy in Saskatchewan, with its silo bedposts, is dreamily settled into the flat prairie landscape with trains rolling by in the distance, perfectly echoed on the boy's bedspread. In Alberta, a girl's bedroom doorway opens out onto the foothills with the mountains beyond. A giant tree makes a cozy bedroom in British Columbia, and an Arctic sled pulled by dogs across the snow is a bed in Yukon. The many details on each page bring each area of Canada to life bathed in a warm nighttime glow, and make this a book children can go back to and pore over again and again."--… (mere)

Jake's Review: This one is a little lame but I am sure little babies like Jesse would like it. I think it might be a fun way for little kids to learn about the different provinces. The illustrations are very nice and mom would probably like them. The rhyme is easy to read so I would be willing to read it to the midget at bedtime if mom forces me to.

Jake's Rating: 6.5/10

Mom's Review: A simple and sweet bedtime story with delightful illustrations. A nice introduction to the provinces and territories of Canada for a young child. Each page has some illustrations of highlights of each of the individual provinces. A wee bit stereotypical but hey it is for the young. The images are very dreamlike and will appeal to both the adult and the child. Also nicely multicultural. Not going to lie Jesse was all meh about this one, but he tends to prefer more bright quirky images.

Mom's Rating: 8/10 ( )
