To be fair, I could find many connections to the adult books I read now, so that makes sense. This is an empowering story for both girls and boys, and it's full of fun, adventure, wit, and even a little intrigue. ( ![]() Princess Magnolia is secretly the Princess in Black who protects the town! This is a perfect early chapter book for kids. The chapters are very short with cute picture drawings often throughout each chapter. The princess in black battles a monster to keep him from eating Duff the goat boys goats. She battles the monster by asking him to behave, when he doesn’t she ties him up and tries to send him back to his part of town. When he does not go she asks him once more but this time with a please so he relents and goes. I liked this part because it teaches kids non violence and to use their words! I also like that the princess has the best of both worlds. She gets to be pretty and girly but also dark and pretty and ninja. This shows young girls that they can be anything they want and do not have to stay in the confines of gender roles or social norms. A heartwarming read that instantly engages young readers in a fun book while evoking slight suspense. I especially loved the pace of this read as it was an appropriately timed read in which events occurred not too fast not too slow. There was enough suspense and excitement to keep one wanting to read to the next page to know what happens next. I’ve read two Princess in Black books now, and I absolutely love this series. These books are so much fun! It’s adventurous and has lots of action without being too scary, and I love the humor within it. The illustrations are bright and wonderful to look at, and the layout of the pages is perfect. There are just the right amount of words to keep it quick-paced and still be engaging but accessible for beginning readers. I will definitely be adding this series to my child’s library!
