Beautifully written, nearly perfect book. It brought me to tears several times. Highly recommended. ( )

Amazing book. I don't give too many books 5 stars. But this book.....family, friendships, flawed people, loved people. I did want to find out "who did it", but the mystery really took second place to the stories of the people and their pasts and the present. ( )

Frank and Jake Drum are two brothers growing up in the early 1960s. Their lives are torn asunder, and their parents estranged as a result of some mysterious deaths. There is a mixture of religion and music, and several versions of familial love and protection; however, this moved too slow for me and I did not care for many of the characters, perhaps because of their various flaws. Despite the high ratings, my advice is to stick with his Cork O'Connor series, which I really like. ( )

This book is beautifully written. The author has the ability to make you feel like you are there and get you really vested in what happens with the characters. I haven't read writing this good since Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". I would highly recommend it ( )

It’s summer, 1961 in small-town Minnesota. Frank is 13-years old; he has an 11-year old younger brother Jake, and an older sister, Ariel (17 or 18). Their father is a minister. At the beginning of the summer, another boy Frank’s age died on or near the train tracks. It’s only a few days later when Frank finds another dead body near the same area. With the “nameless itinerant” (as he is called througout the rest of the book), Frank and Jake see a Native man, but they sense no harm from him, Warren Redbird, so they talk with him a bit. I don’t want to say too much more, but there is a mystery in the book and it kind of is a summer of death. The back of the book says “it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder.”

I really liked this. It was slow moving, but I still enjoyed it. The pace did kind of pick up, maybe half way through the book. I was a bit concerned about how it would end, but it turned out as I “hoped” it would. ( )

It's the kind of book where you fight between wanting to race through it to the finish and attempting to make it last. Luckily it's paced so well and is so satisfying a meal for the mind, I was able to put it down every few chapters and happily mull over what has gone before, feeling sated.

It's the kind of introspective, intelligent novel where there are layers of meaning behind every word, and personal history and context wrapped in the motives of every character. It also has a strong plot, for those who like Kent Krueger for his thrillers.

Krueger has created a cast of compelling characters (young and old), each in his or her own way searching for something, including the narrator’s father, the town’s Methodist pastor, and his mother, whose bold personality worries his congregation.

Although Krueger’s plot rises to a predictable conclusion, there’s such a quiet beauty in his prose and such depth to his characters that I was completely captivated by this book’s ordinary grace

All the dying that summer began with the death of a child, a boy with golden hair and thick glasses, killed on the railroad tracks outside New Bremen, Minnesota, sliced into pieces by a thousand tons of steel speeding across the prairie toward South Dakota.

I still spend a lot of time thinking about the events of that summer. About the terrible price of wisdom. The awful grace of God.
