This book was very good. It sadden me that the monster had no friends to play with because he was just too ugly. I was happy when the monster created a stone rabbit, that did not break when he sung or dance, and it became the monster's only friend. The illustrator did an amazing job with creating the monster because he was ugly. I think this book teaches a lesson that not matter how ugly something or someone is, you should be friends with them. This wonderful children's book is the saddest thing I've ever read. It's a testament to the author and illustrator's power that it can have such an effect. I'll leave it up to you to read a synopsis of the story. It makes me sad just thinking of it. Well done.

Warning: It may be too sad to read to children. ( )

A monster so ugly that everything he sees either runs away or breaks to pieces is condemned to live out his days alone in a cave. He tries to carves friends out of stone to talk to, but only one, a little rabbit, does not crumble from his hideousness. He spends the rest of his life with his stone rabbit friend, eventually dying from old age. This book was so completely sad, reminding me of the volleyball Wilson in the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away. I kept waiting for the rabbit to come to life so the monster would have some real companionship, but I guess life doesn't always work out that way. I want to give this book more stars as it really moved me, but I can't imagine how I would share it with children, unless I felt like we were all in need of a good cry. ( )

Monster is so ugly everyone and everything is afraid of him, except a stone rabbit. This rabbit gives him great joy and companionship throughout his life. ( )
