A young boy, who is a painter, is very troubled by the fact that he can not paint the wind of his island. He can paint the water and the light, but he can not paint the wind. When summer comes, many painters come to the boy's island to paint. Each painter is different; they use different paint, and they paint different things. The boy spends time with each of the painters that visits the island, and watches how each painter does their work. There is the painter of flowers, the painter of faces, the painter of still lifes, and the painter of landscapes. At the end of the summer, all of the painters gather their work and display their paintings in the barn. As the boy looks at how the painter of ladscapes has captured the wind blowing his dog's hair on the beach, he realizes the painter has painted the wind. Then the boy looks at his own painting of bent palm trees, and he realizes that he too has painted the wind. This is a very inspirational book, and teaches children that our imaginations have no ends. ( ) This is a good source of realistic non-fiction because it tells the story of a little boy at summer time who waits for the painters to come to his island so that he can learn from them and learn how to paint the wind. The island as the setting because this is where the painting happens. This could potentially be in several different time periods, but the place of the island is where the boy learns to paint the wind.
