Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

The tyrannical Alliance continues its war against the Republic of Cinnabar, and Daniel Leary, newly promoted to Commander, and his crew have a new mission: Stop Dunbar's World from falling to an invasion by the planet Pellegrino. Nataniel Arruns, son of the dictator of Pellegrino, has landed with a large contingent, intending to set himself up as the ruling warlord, with the planet's population becoming workers-serfs-of the Pellegrinian overlords. And Dunbar's world has no more than their local police force to oppose him. Leary again commands the corvette Princess Cecile, but on this mission her missile tubes are empty. Only one man is in a position to aid Leary, but the rich and powerful would rather see him fail than succeed in stopping the invasion. Leary must somehow overcome a large entrenched force on an island defended by powerful plasma cannon and shipkilling missiles and backed up by a heavily armed warship in orbit, all while commanding only a small and virtually unarmed spacecraft. But Leary again has the help of Signals Officer Adele Mundy, who can make computer networks do the apparently impossible. Leary, Mundy and the crew of the Princess Cecile have gone up against impossible odds before . . . and their opponents in those victorious missions are still wondering just what hit them.

Again, the team of Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy find themselves facing impossible odds though this time they are acting on their own behalf rather than for the Lords and Master of the Republic of Cinnabar as they attempt to stop the invasion of a planet with a vessel without missiles! There are lots of shenanigans, both military and political to overcome before Daniel and his crew can overcome the odds facing them.

The story is strong on action though you may feel the way that Daniel hypes up his crew is somewhat overdone and some of the politics are a bit simplistics (IMHO of course) ( )

An entertaining but frustrating book. It is entertaining because it has plenty of action and an interesting mix of characters. It is frustrating because it is hard to like the 'good' guys. The two main characters, Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy, border on being elitist and bigoted. This fits to a certain extent given the society model used and given that Some Golden Harbor is firmly set in the space opera niche of science fiction but they are just too condescending too often for my tastes. Worse is that the 'good' guys are, well, thugs. How so? Well, lets just look at what happens after our heroes have won a small fight and the hoodlums are completely beaten:

Woodson stared in disbelief as Hogg lifted the groaning Pintada's head halfway into the driver's compartment.
"You want the car, wog?", he shouted.
And slammed the door with his foot.

Hogg is Daniel's man servant and, sorry, but I can't like such a character. And so I am frustrated by Some Golden Harbor. I want to like the characters but I don't. I want to read the other books in the series until I remember how many times something happened in this one that made me want to set it down and move on to something else. And I want to recommend it because it is a good old-fashioned space opera and I spent many an hour as a teen reading such books. But for me the flaws outweigh the good and I'll recommend David Weber's Honor series and E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series and Skylark series instead. ( )
