"Hosteen Storm, a Native American soldier for Earth, barely escaped his doomed home world when the Xik destroyed it. Armed with his soldier's skills, his ancestors' insights, and an uncanny ability to communicate mind-to-mind with animals, Storm is a hero unlike any other in science fiction." "Now, science fiction Grand Master Andre Norton has teamed up with Lyn McConchie to pit Storm against his most dangerous enemy yet: Death-Which-Comes-in-the-Night." "It is silent. It leaves no tracks. The only evidence that remains is the perfectly cleaned bones of its victims. And it has developed a taste for humans." "No one has survived an attack yet, and the natives of Storm's adopted planet, Arzor, are moving in on human territory as they try to escape the silent scourge. The already high tensions between Humans and Natives soar, sparking a race against time as Storm attempts to solve the mystery of Death-Which-Comes-in-the-Night before Humans and Natives clash." "But he can't do it without help from Tani, a genetic engineer from the Ark, a ship traveling space with genetic material from across the galaxy, including the destroyed Earth. But Tani has been poisoned against Beast Masters by her mother. She must conquer her own unreasoning hatred, and awaken the powerful Beast Master in herself, before she and Storm can conquer Death-Which-Comes-in-the-Night and uncover the great conspiracy that threatens not only Arzor, but all human-occupied planets."--BOOK JACKET.… (mere)

I love every book of the series that Andre Norton wrote. Why? Because each book can stand alone with out losing anything. In this novel she quietly shows how combat prejudices and change attitudes, while standing to convictions. An over arching element of many of her crafted stories is love and several of its aspects show up in this story. The good thing about a Norton story is, as you read this isn't apparent and does get in the way of a great yarn. ( )

This is the third book in the series of Beast Master books, this one co-written by Lyn McConchie and takes place on the desert world of Arzor, following on fairly closely to the two earlier books.

Hosteen's and his new found family on the desert planet of Arzor reckon they have earned some time for peace, to grow their holdings free from alien invaders or native uprisings. As they look forward to the arrival of the Ark, a starship hold genetic samples from as much terran fauna as could be loaded before Terra had been burnt off by the invading Xic. Hosteen wanted to see if he could get mates for members of his team, and everyone was interested in seeing if meercats coudl teke over an ecological niche that was in danger of being vacated. But there was something going on in the Blue that would see the feared Nitra natives encroaching on their more civilised neighbouring Norbies who then started pushing in on Settler lands, threatening the human presence on Arzor. Hosteen and Tani most find a way of uniting their powers to find out what was causing this mass movement, and reversing its effects while keeping the three parties together. ( )

Like quite a lot. It's an excellent sequel to the original pair - I like Lyn McConchie, she writes very well with Andre. Storm finds/makes even deeper roots... ( )
