Flotsam balances perfectly between reality and possibility, taking an every-day occurrence and turning it to a imaginative adventure. Wiesner's illustrations are energetic and cinematic, and add exciting drama to the simple discovery of a camera. Best of all, no text gets in the way of the beautiful illustrations that tell their own story and invite participation from young readers. C’s favorite part is the magical underwater photos which capture things like starfish islands, mechanical fish, and octopus read-aloud time.

A Fantastical book that has so much to see in each illustration. Through images, Wiesner is able to tell the story of a boy on beach who finds not a message in a bottle but a camera. Caught on film are underwater worlds with unexpected elements. It feels like this could be real because Wiesner's art s so fine but also because of the wide range of familiar sea life present. There's a twist at the end!

In this book, a young boy stumbles on an old camera on the beach. With curiosity, he goes somewhere to find out what kind of photos are in the camera and sees a lot more than he could imagine. He sees that this camera has been all around the world, through multiple oceans, and has also been around for decades. Pictures at some point were black and white.

This would be a good book for intermediate and middle school readers. Although it is just a picture book, some of the concepts may be a little more advanced for young children. It had very realistic illustrations though and historical hi-lights. The camera is almost like a message in a bottle metaphor, traveling through the ocean over the years, showing what the deep sea looks like. The book has a lovely storyline but it was harder for me to see some of the educational benefits. ( )

This is a wordless book that circles around a curious boy at the beach who discovered an old camera with unique film of the ocean life and previous children who have discovered this camera before him. It would be great for all ages, but primarily primary-intermediate.
