Flannery O'Connor's astonishing and haunting first novel is a classic of twentieth-century literature. It is the story of Hazel Motes, a twenty-two-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate faith. He falls under the spell of a "blind" street preacher named Asa Hawks and his degenerate fifteen-year-old daughter. In an ironic, malicious gesture of his own non-faith, and to prove himself a greater cynic than Hawks, Hazel founds The Church of God Without Christ, but is still thwarted in his efforts to lose God. He meets Enoch Emery, a young man with "wise blood," who leads him to a mummified holy child, and whose crazy maneuvers are a manifestation of Hazel's existential struggles. This tale of redemption, retribution, false prophets, blindness, and wisdom gives us one of the most riveting characters in American fiction.… (mere)

Having read some of O'Connor's short stories, this novella seems to be even more bizarre. Among a grotesque gallery of characters one of the strangest sets out to preach the Church without Christ, reflecting both his upbringing as the son of a minister and his loss of faith as a soldier in WWII. His behavior is exactly that of an evangelical minister until he falls into depression, blinds himself, wraps himself in barbed wire, and dies of exposure. ( )

A Masterpiece. Strikingly original use of simile and symbol throughout. Whether it's description or dialogue the narrative is never less than compelling and blackly comic. Reading this some thirty years after first encountering it in college, I get so much more from it now. I didn't remember the Enoch character figuring so prominently. The John Huston film is well worth seeing too. ( )

"Wise Blood" is probably hilarious for some people. It reminded me a lot of "There will be Blood" in that other people loved it and I found it dull and frustrating. ( )

As raw, cruel, nasty, fascinating, and darkly comic as anything I can recall reading. A short but deep portrait of lost individuals and a corrupt society. ( )

Hazel Motes comes back from war totally abandoned, and the guilt he carries is transforms him into a preacher of the Church without Christ, a stubborn rejection of salvation. He encounters false preachers, one presumably blind, one eager to gull people out of their money; women who are easy, or manipulative, or both; a young man desperate for meaning, all vividly portrayed.

I must say I was mesmerized by the intense , grotesque characters, and the magnificent language. The novel stitches together several short stories, which are O'Connor's forte, but it flowed well for me. And the portrayal of intense guilt struggling with faith was very powerful.

Each character is intensified, even the minor ones, so that it is as if the reader entered a nightmare world where people pursue their objectives with single-minded determination, finding nothing but obstacles. One character becomes something of a saint; another something of an animal. I couldn't look away. ( )

Hazel Motes sat at a forward angle on the green plush train seat, looking one minute at the window as if he might want to jump out of it, and the next down the aisle at the other end of the car.
